Dehydration

Hi everyone.  Is anyone else feeling MORE dehydrated as treatment goes on??  I am on VIC.  Even with my water intake, I noticed earlier this week (Week 10) that my lips were chapped, my skin is dry and my hair is parched.  Time for some changes again.  Any recommendations??  Thanks for your thoughts.

Oh, since beginning VIC, I also have this weird side effect of milky white stuff in the corner of my eyes.  Doesn't hurt or itch, but I wondered if anyone else had this side.  Thanks.

Bee, your not a lone.   Combating week10 on INC and everyday is a something new.   Last night my throat dried up so bad i started choking and then lost my supper ( sorry for the visual) , and even consumed over 100 oz of water before that happened.    Today I am sending my husband to Walmart to get a humidifier and see if that will help.   It is getting really cold and dry right now in Kansas and that is not helping.
I have sores in the corner of my mouth & inside my nose, I am using saline to keep moisture but it is barely helping.  My Sinus' are swollen and there isnt much coming out, but I am on a Z-pak too right now, so I am sure that is helping with the drying thing.   Im not as wheezy though.
At the beginning of week 3 my hair started thinning which is amazing because I have really thick curly hair,  then I started getting scabs on my scalp from the itches, so I mowed my hair down with the clippers to a very short buzz cut and that helped, but now even what is growing in is very dry and brittle.  My skin is not so bad, I keep it very well moisturized and exfoliate every nite with a rough wash cloth and antibacterial soap.  That has really helped with the inc & riba rash.
I just really am hoping alot of the sx go away upon finishing the Incivek :)
Blessings to all,  Keep fighting xoxo

Another thing is those cuties clementins. They are the perfect size. I really recommend a humidifier at night helps, WEN for the hair,Tinactin for the lips. I put light sesame oil or olive oil all over bfore showering. The ACT for dry mouth is what my hygienist tells me to use because it has fluride.
Bean I also have trouble with my fingers tips mine just crack widr open and they throb. I use the dot bandaids with little anti biotic ointment. The humidfier helps the skin. I have found the more anemic the worst the hand cracks parched lips. After the ttransfusion they heal until next time.

Does anyone else have issues with their voice getting horse after talking for about 10 min?  I have had a cough since about week 1 that feels like I am having trouble clearing my lungs.  Doctor did an x-ray and lungs were clear but 23 weeks in it is continuing.  Wake up almost every night with my throat so dry that I almost can't swallow.  Anyway, the fun is over in 5-6 weeks.

Side effects are common, I am in week 23 (of 28) with Vic and tell people its a Wheel of Fortune side effect every day.  My skin, including lips are dry and I am constantly drinking water then peeing all the time including thru the night.  I have to use a moisturizer cream after every shower to keep from peeling especially scalp and face.  I also wear contacts and they get very dry and my eyes crusty in the AM.  Be glad when this is over and I can get back to tasting food and getting back to the gym.  Best of luck to you.

Hi I just finished tx however it seemed no matter how much water I drank I could not keep up.

About your eye, my Dad had a white discharge and it turned out to be an infection, you might want to get it checked again.  At first the doc had him wash his closed eyes with baby shampoo and then gave him a prescription eye drop

I hope you have discovered what it is by now or I guess it could be tx related, I have read dry eyes all the time.  Now that I am off tx I hope it goes away

Good luck

Living -- Interesting that you have the eye discharge too.  I have had dry eye before but this is different.

Thanks again everyone for the input!  I will look for the plug in vaporizer/humidifier at Walgreen's today and if they don't have it, I will order it from Amazon.  My hair feels absolutely like cornhusk today.  I sprayed a ton of oil on it this morning and it soaked it right up.  Sorry to hear about the cracked fingertips.  It sounds so familiar but I can't quite remember.  If you are not bleeding, you might want to try a parrafin wax hand dip (feet too) at a nail salon.  It should draw out some of the pain and leave your skin silky smooth, at least temporarily.  Wish I could do that too but the heat affects my blood pressure :0(  And then, you can moisturize (Vaseline, Aquaphor, Lotion) your hands at night and sleep in cotton gloves and socks.

Good Grief, If I could just get all my thoughts together in one paragraph..   As far as the milky white stuff in the corners of your eyes.   I have it too and have had it for since the beginning of treatment.   It is much worse now, but I am making sure I keep  eyedrops in my eyes all the time.   Its just dry eye.    I even get it when I am not on tx.   I have had lasik surgery on my eyes and they are always dry.   So something at Walmart or Walgreens in the eye section, for Lasik eye surgery will work really well.    You can also see if your doc will prescribe you "Restatis"   It is expensive, but REALLY works.    :)

That looks like it will work really good for the purpose.  Right now I am just wanting something really easy I can just move with me.     I have had some really expensive ones in the past and they are such a pain in the neck, the filters get expensive too.    Definately get one no matter what , you will be so glad you did and keep them ceiling fans off , all they do is help dry you out.    Blessings xoxoox  Carrie

Is it really the PI you are taking causing the dehydration?

I'm not taking what you guys are taking.  In fact, I don't know if I'm getting anything other than SOC.

The ends of my fingers feel like they are peeling off.  It is definitely quite painful.  I have a humidifier in the bedroom, have it set for full blast and still wake up every morning feeling like my throat is closed, extremely dry nose.

I drink 4 litres of water during the work day, then glass after glass at home.

My eyes are always itchy.  :(

I'm on track to drink another 2 gal. + of water today.  I've drank enough water to float a battleship around...to plagiarize a line from LS.  Week 2 blood work came back today.  Things look good.  Week 1 wacked my WBC in half, but I’m back in the normal range today.  I cut out the Tylenol and Motrin, because I read it can hurt WBC.  I also stated drinking protein shakes, as I read that certain Amino Acids help in blood cell production.
I have no real side effects other than being more tired than usual. Mostly hangover/ mild flu symptoms this week.  I think water is the key.  I finished bottle #4 (80oz.) by 8:00 AM.  Yesterday 15 bottles.  (300 oz.) .  I don’t see how the ½ oz. per pound of body weight recommendation is nearly enough water to keep the side effects at bay, but I already drank more than that going in.  I notice that most symptoms (bad taste, nausea, a feeling of lung congestion/tightness) all go away with more water.

"EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration

EU bans claim that water can prevent dehydration Brussels bureaucrats were ridiculed yesterday after banning drink manufacturers from claiming that water can prevent dehydration.

EU officials concluded that, following a three-year investigation, there was no evidence to prove the previously undisputed fact.

Producers of bottled water are now forbidden by law from making the claim and will face a two-year jail sentence if they defy the edict, which comes into force in the UK next month.

Last night, critics claimed the EU was at odds with both science and common sense. Conservative MEP Roger Helmer said: “This is stupidity writ large.

“The euro is burning, the EU is falling apart and yet here they are: highly-paid, highly-pensioned officials worrying about the obvious qualities of water and trying to deny us the right to say what is patently true.

“If ever there were an episode which demonstrates the folly of the great European project then this is it.” Related Articles

NHS health guidelines state clearly that drinking water helps avoid dehydration, and that Britons should drink at least 1.2 litres per day.

The Department for Health disputed the wisdom of the new law. A spokesman said: “Of course water hydrates. While we support the EU in preventing false claims about products, we need to exercise common sense as far as possible."...............

He said: “The EU is saying that this does not reduce the risk of dehydration and that is correct.

“This claim is trying to imply that there is something special about bottled water which is not a reasonable claim.”

Oranges too.  Last couple of days I have gotten up at 5, eaten 1/4 of an orange and taken my VIC.  Sometimes I go back to bed for awhile, sometimes I get up -- but that orange seems to help the mouth dryness and I am sick of about everything else to eat at 5 in the morning.

Living -- I bet it is cold in Kansas now.  Hope that humidifier helps.  I like the visual of mowing your hair down.  I keep mine short - about 2" but it sure is getting noticably thinner

i have sores on bth corners of my mouth. My hands are so dry my finger tips crack open and are very painful and we can't forget the itching!

O thanks!!  You just reminded me......during training, my treatment nurse did recommend a humidifier!  I totally forgot.  She said there are small plug ins, so I think I will order this one or something similar:

That INC is some nasty sounding stuff.  Hoping your sides go away real soon.

Hey Bean :)

I have only ever had fingers peeling like that when I got into some too strong cleaning products.  That sounds totally uncomfortable.  I had something with the webbing between my fingers (prior to tx) and used an Athlete's Foot cream, that really helped.

Yes, I had my eyes checked out with my Opthamologist just prior to tx.  Guess it wouldn't hurt to have him take a look again.  I did already show it to my Hepatologist, who didn't seem concerned.  And when I say milky white, I don't mean the regular sleep stuff that's in your eyes.  I mean, this looks like I dabbed the corners of my eye with Whiteout.  Very weird and noticeable.

Forcing water and popsicles.  Spraying oil on my hair, which helps when I remember to do it.  I guess sometime soon, I will have to go for a body treatment and facial at the spa, to give my skin a boost.  Seems we have skipped Fall and dropped right into Winter dryness here in So. California.

Thanks and take care :)

Me too.  Sometimes I am really good about the water and sometime I can barely sip it down.  My lips are parched and skin is dry and hair is breaking off at the shaft.  It is a little early for this to be from the winter dryness.  Another thing -- wonder if anyone else out there has experienced this.  -- The tips of my fingertips all peeled, then they all developed tiny cracks which, of course split open and caused me much pain.  I often have these kinds of cracks on a finger or two, but this was every finger on my right (I am right handed) hand.  They did it a little on the left, but not as much.

Bee, I don't have the milky eye thing and am not familiar with that.  Did you get an initial baseline retinal exam?  I know most doctors do not tell you to, but it is a recommended test before you treat.  You might want to check with your eye doctor, just in case.

But back to the water -- we just need to force it down.  I know it helps and I think drinking large glasses of water with the VIC helps the metal mouth.  So, a toast of the clear sparkling to you, Bee

frijole

ps --hatteras man - you must be literally floating away?  I know I was enormously thirsty during my first couple of weeks and had no problem with at least a gallon, but two?????  Welcome to the forum -- how has your first two weeks gone so far?

Redsurfer --  Good to know I am not alone!  I did show my doc my eye a few weeks ago, so she could see the side effect for herself.

Screaming --  Oh geez, sorry to hear about the kidney function.  Keep on your doc about IV fluids.  Are you using Biotene or something similar for dry mouth?  It helps with the tongue thing.

Hatter -- OMG that's a lot of water.  I have a mini-Arrowhead type bottle that holds 8 glasses of water.  If there's water in it at the end of the day -- I didn't drink enough.  Or, I can at least gage how much more I need to drink once I get home from work.

Thanks everyone.  Glad to know I am not the only parched patient :o)

I'm only in week 2 and cannot believe the amount of water I am drinking.  My water bottle has become an extension of my hand.  I don't go anywhere without it.  When I leave the house I put a gallon of water in a playmate cooler.  I am drinking a minimum of 10 20oz bottles of water per day.  Today I have had 15.  My wife says I finally know what it’s like to be pregnant and have to use the bathroom what seems like every 15 minutes.

I have been tracking my water intake by putting a tick mark on a peice of paper every time I fill my water bottle and have  been drinking more than 2 gallons of water per day for the past week.

I can't drink enough and stay hydrated and my kidney function is not good. I am wondering how long the doc is going to let me go like that before I get iv fluids, everything on me is very dry and in the mornings I can barely move my tongue it is so dry.
