Liver Biospy ~

My surgeon left me a voice mail last night - she said the biopsy showed "grade 1 stage 0"

Can anyone interrupt this for me please?

My last biopsy in 2001 was a 1-1. Does this mean I got better??

I am very excited!!

Excellent bx results. May not mean improvement, though, as needle bx can have this much variation depending on where the sample is taken from. Still, even 1/1 is good. Sounds like you've been taking care of yourself. Maybe not as 'wilde' as your screen name implies.
Grade is the degree of current inflammation, stage the amount of fibrosis (damage). If your first bx showed stage 1 and this one showed stage 0, either your liver has been healing itself (happens) or the samples were taken from different areas of your liver.
Still, great stuff. Congrats.

Very cool results. As desrt mentioned, there can be variation from one sample to the next, as well as subjectivity in reporting. The gist of it is you have very little damage, and have lots of leeway in the treat-don’t-treat decision. For more definitive information, go to Janis and Friends; this explains the different types of grading systems, and touches on how they arrive at their reporting:
