Elevated ALT but Dr. was not concerned

This board is mainly for Hep. c but you may help in these results:

ALT = 64 (Normal 13-63) for this particular lab.
AST = 39 (Normal 16-39)

Cholesterol = 209
LDL = 153
HDL = 32
Triglycerides = 119

All other blood tests were normal except Carbone Dioxide which was 29 (Normal 21-28)

My doc. was not concerned at all and indicated that all these results were normal.

I don't drink any more (for the last 8 mo.) and previous results of ALT and AST were 45 & 34 were taken on last Jan.

Is there anything alarming from the above results?

Appreciate your help & reply,

Al

I know, the dreaded "this is what my doc told me" statement...that a lot of docs formerly were saying that high top of "normal" was in the mid-40's, etc...but now many are taking high normal to be a bit lower than that, and optimally, you should be in the teens or a bit higher to the 30's, but mid-40's is really in the out-of-range side for most people - and of course the caveat being that many things can screw with them, and this you have to look at as to what is 'consistenly' raising them...they say that women maybe should be a bit lower then men generally speaking...(finally posted a pic over there) hope you and yours are having a great weekend, oh friend from the North...

What do you take the tylenol PM for? You probably know you can concoct your own with benedryl (for sleeping) and tylenol. Maybe you cold take the benedryl only, if you're using it for sleep?

Anyone have an inkling of the distribution of the curve used to define normal ALT? Given the 13-63 example in this thread, how many of the overall population might be higher than 63? Where's the top of the bell curve? High teens?

oh good. You still need to know why they are almost 3 times above normal. I'd see a Hep or get a 2nd opinion and find out why. best of luck to you.

Thank you Mike and Kalio.

Last Dec (2005) the ALT & AST were mildly elevated (140 & 40+).
I stopped Alchol and Tylemol PM and others such as Dalmane for sleep and re-test and the results was(45 & 33).This week, after about 6-month, I tested and it was a little bit at the upper high and I start taking Tylenol PM as needed but not on regular and few times will have Dalmane to help sleep.

Do these drugs affect ALT and for how long, I read somewhere that should abstain from most for about 50-72hours.

Appreciate your time,

Al

Hey there how are you doing? (sorry everybody, I know this isn't an open thread). I haven't been on here for a couple of weeks. I haven't been feeling very well at all. Staying sick to my stomach alot the past couple of weeks. I went to my PC doctor last Tuesday. He says I either have a virus LOL or the pain medication I just started on is making me sick. I talked to him about feeling like I have the flu alot here lately. So now I'm being sent to a hepatalogist again. I don't know if they will want to try me on the meds again or not. I guess I will soon find out. Anyway I just wanted to see how your doing.

As I see it you're 1 point above normal -not 3 times normal. Many things can influence ALT: acetaminophen, ampicillin, tetracyclines, muscle injury and more. You could either see a specialist or test again in a few months and see if your results improve. Mike
