Elevated AST level in a 13 month old infant.

We adopted an infant girl from Guatemala and at 12 months we had her blood tested.  The ONLY test that came slightly abnormal was AST.  Her AST level was 49 with high normal being 41.  She was given 2 booster shots and a dose of chidren's tylenol prior to her blood being drawn.  She has been tested and vaccinated for all 3 Hepatitis'.  Is there anything to be concerned about and if so, what?

Thanks.

Hi CraigK,

This is very old post but I am facing same situation with my 19 month daughter same as yours. Her test shows only AST level is 39 which is higher than Normal range <=30. She was also drawn blood after given shot for Hep-B and flu shot. How is your daughter doing? Please share your experience. Thank You.

Thanks Jakied.

All of our little girls' Hep tests did come back negative.  She was retested the other day and her AST was 44.  It came down from 49, but she still got a Chicken Pox shot before we had the blood drawn.  Makes you wonder if these shots have any affect on liver function and enzyme levels.  She has received vaccinations for both A and B.

First of all, a vaccine for Hep C does not exist.  Boy, what a great thing that would be!  Maybe some day.  As of today, though, not possible.

your daughter probably did receive the vaccine for hep a and b, which is good for her.

From your post, i am assuming the hepatitis tests were all neg?  If so, i wouldn't worry about an infection for your sweetie.  The ast will probably come down.
