Are antihistamines safe for the liver?

I have found that Benedryl caps really help me to sleep, but I have been having some sharp URQ pain and trying to figure out why it has increased. Could anthistamines be the culprit?  Thanks.

As far as I know benadryl in normal dosages is generally considered ok for the liver. My hepatologist is pretty conservative and he had no problem with me taking benadryl for sleep/itch etc. He would also pretty liberally prescribe atarax which is a stronger prescription antihistamine. At the height of a nasty drug rash I got, I was taking them poopin' things like pez, 3 and even 4 at a time (don't recall mg's offhand) and he seemed pretty comfortable with it. Of course I desperately needed relief and I don't have cirrhosis, so not sure it would be comparable for someone with cirrhosis. But my guess is that a single benadryl as a sleeping aid would be relatively safe.

of course it is impossible to be certain of the reason for URQ pain, and if persistant your doc should be informed.
however Gi sides from benadryl can occur and can be minimized by taking it with food or milk.
generally regarded safe in the hepc population but not without listed contraindications that can be found on the package insert.
perhaps another med can better help with symptoms of insomnia?
