High sgot

My friend (31yrs old) has recently done a body checkup and found that the sgot level is 65 & SGPT is 150. His BP, Cholestrol, Sugar every thing is normal. He consumes alcohol occasionally and some times in high quantities. Now he has fully stopped it. Should he take any medicines to reduce the sgot, sgpt or will it return to normal automatically if he stops drinking ? He doesn't feel any problems or illness and is fit and healthy. Pls give a reply.

once you find out your liver enzymes are high you must find out why.  the high numbers means there is something killing the liver and it could be alot more than just alchohol. he could have severe damage to the liver called cirhosis. there can be several causes for cirhosis. alchohol is just one of them. he could also have "viral" hepatitus a,b,or c. he could have a different liver disease too. he must find out why those numbers are high and a dr or gastrointerologist/hepatologist can help him. he should find out as soon as possible.

he should be tested (in blood) to find out if he has viral hepatitus a,b, or c.   he should have a "LIVER BIOPSY" done to find out the damage level of the liver and it can also show the dr why it is dieing. the damage of the liver could be really high or it could be low and there is no way to know for sure without a biopsy. he may also want a ct scan or ultra sound to check for the overall size and texture of the liver and spleen. this is to see if other organs are effected by the liver damage or if there is liver cancer.

let us know what he finds out and perhaps we can help you more.

I hope you realize that there are no physicians answering questions in this forum. We are hepatitis patients and share a basic knowledge of things.
He should go for a physical and work up and get his questions answered in detail at the time of consult.

Alcohol is certainoly a reason for high liver enzymes. He should totally stop the alcohol and have the enzymes rechecked. If they are still elevated a few weeks off alcohol he should ask his doc for a hepatitis panel.
