Martha, it is wonderful that you have found a new doctor in Georgia. I am hoping he/she is a gastroenterologist or a hepatologist who is experienced in working with people with Heptitis C and experienced in treating them. If your new doctor is not a specialist, then I recommend getting a soecialist. Most regular doctors know next to nothing about Hep C or its treatment.

Once the specialist does some tests,  determines your Genotype, does a liver biopsy, then he/she can discuss your treatment options.

This forum is a great forum for information and support so hopefully you will stick around awhile. Feel free to post any questions you have and we will try to respond with appropriate responses.

Best of luck!

What geno type are you? What is your viral load?what was the result of you biopsy?  These are all things you should know.

There  are zero clinical studies that show Milk Thistle has any effect on HCV.

80% of the people in this forum know HCV inside and out.  So when you say things like "no effect" without providing your biopsy results, or "remission" based on blood work it doesn't fly.  As there is no way to determine the condition of your liver without a fibroscan, or biopsy. There is no remission of the HCV virus either you have it or you dont. You can have a high viral load without much damage to your liver, or a low viral load that causes much damage.

sorry..I forgot to answer  this question  .It is the drugs you take to eradicate the virus which would stop any further damage from HCV and it is approx. 80 % successful (depending on many factors).

How do you know ? Have you had a biopsy or a Fibroscan? These are the only methods a doctor would be able to tell you the amount of liver damage (fibrosis) you may have.
Most often HCV does not present any symptoms and liver damge may be progressing without one feeling any ill effects until the liver de-compensates and then a liver transplant would be needed.
If you have had HCV for 17 years it would be advised you see a specilaist to run all the approriate tests to ascertain how it has progresses and if treatment may be warrented now or in the future.

Welcome..

Blood work does not show the amount of damage to your liver, only a liver biopsy would truely show the damage. Once you are in end stage liver failure there are some bloodwork signs that will show up, but usually not until then.

Unfortunatly, liver damage doesn't feel like much most of time until it is very advanced and too late and there is severe damage.

have you had a PCR test done?  This shows the viral load(VL) count of HCV in your blood.  If there is a VL count, then HCV is working it's evil magic.

There are various treatments and study trials people are involved in, some have had success, some not.
I have had Hep C at the very least since 1985 ans took milk thistle and other good liver herbs. These herbs while maybe supportive to the liver do not kill the virus. At the point that my liver became inflammed and seemingly engaged in battle, a few years back there was nothing that could stop it but possibly the TX drugs people are now taking.
You may be one of those rare people that beat it w/o the drugs. Most of us will not.
Good luck to you
