I am NOT saying that my heartburn was caused from having Hep C but I used to get crazy painful HB all the time. Since I treated and cleared I now get reoccuring bouts of gastritis and puking but no heartburn. I am NOT saying that the gastritis is from the inf or riba.

Dave...as part of my study trial...that I am still in, was told all PPI"S prohibited, actually it was listed on a sheet of "prohibited drugs whike on tx" It went on to say H2 receptor antagonists are allowed but must be administed 2 hrs.post or prior to meds.
I don"t know the reason .other than guessing that they thought it would adversely affect absorbtion?

I guess you were saying that you did not use them during tx, sorry I misunderstood. What was the reason you were told no PPIs during hcv tx?

"I also have had GERD for many yrs. and it was never attributed to HCV. I treated with NEXIUM(40mg) with good results, however on tx. I was told the proton pump inhibitors(nexium prevacid etc)were prohibited, however the H2 antacids were allowed."
I was confused by your post. were you saying you were told no PPIs during treatment but you still used them during tx? Did you SVR?
I have been using the prevacid the whole time I have been on treatment with the full consent of my hepatologist, I also spoke with another hepatologist about this who said it should not effect obsorption of the drugs or treatment outcome.
Thanks,
Dave
"Basically you should avoid everything that's good."
so true, haha.

Basically you should avoid everything that's good.
I also have gerd and take prevacid. I find it took some time to work and that staying away from the foods to be avoided makes a huge difference. It's incredible how uncomfortable the gerd can be untreated.
http://gerd.emedtv.com/gerd/gerd-foods-to-avoid.html
"If you have GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder), you may be put on a special diet. Some specific foods to avoid include:
Chocolate
Peppermint
Fried and fatty foods
Tomato products
Foods and drinks that contain caffeine
Alcoholic beverages.
Coffee and alcohol actually stimulate your stomach to make more acid than usual. Alcohol, chocolate, and fatty foods are believed to cause the lower esophageal sphincter to weaken. Together, too much stomach acid and a weak lower esophageal sphincter can increase the symptoms of GERD.
You may also want to avoid the following foods if you have been diagnosed with GERD:
Onions
Garlic
Mustard
Certain spices
Vinegar
Carbonated beverages, such as soda
Citrus fruits and juices."
Hope this helps,
Dave
gastritis let to my Hep C dx but I have never been able to link both conditions.
Have had great HepC blood work (enzymes,VL ect...) during very bad gastritis and
very mild gastritis symptoms during upflare of HepC.....
Have been UND for 30wks on tx now and it has no impact on my gastritis.
BTW , acid blockers don`t work for me either but Carafate did, with the added bonus
that it only gets minimally absorbed in the bloodstream and therefore is no additional
burden on the liver.
As can-do-man said it has nothing to do with HCV, I suffer from GERD also and take 40mg's of Nexium daily which works well.
I know many people that suffer from acid reflux that don't have HCV, prevacid and prilosec are now OTC and work really good.
maybe try ...'"iflora" a muti probiotic.....could be an enzyme problem...might take about a week or two to work........billy
Yes I do, I'm on Protonix once a day. My experience has been that you have to take it for a couple of months before you feel any results. This last time I've been taking it for around a couple of weeks. It's a common symptom of HepC but not everyone has problems with it. You just got to watch what you eat and don't eat right before you go to sleep.
