From EASL 2009:

http://www.natap.org/2009/EASL/EASL_13.htm

“…In this study genotype 2 treatment naive patients achieved a mean 4 log reduction in viral load after 6 days on monotherapy with telaprevir. The triple combination of telaprevir + peg/RBV achieved a mean 5.3 log reduction in viral load at day 16. But genootype 3 patients only achieved a -.80 reduction in viral load so therapy for genotype 3 won't be pursued…”

The first protease inhibitors (Telaprevir and Boceprevir) or newest drugs to combat hepc  should be released sometime in 2011.  However, studies have shown poor results for sustained virological response in genotype 3 and these new drugs are not effective against eradicating the virus in those with genotype 3.  Another group of drugs known a polymerase inhibitors are in trial stages right now but the release date and effectiveness against all genotypes is unknown.

Genotype 3 requires 24 wks of treatment and the cure rate is high.  Because of your location and the poor response geno 3's have to the new drugs,  interferon and ribavirin would be your mom's best bet at this point.\

I'm sorry to say that her damage is being caused by the virus, so until she gets rid of the virus the damage is going to continue. That is why we are willing to go through a treatment that makes us feel so sick for so long... because we want the virus out of our bodies and right now there is only one way to do it.

No interferon and ribavirin is not a guaranteed cure but at the moment is the only  available treatment and whether there are side effects or not it shouldnt be dismissed without thought. Other more promising therapies are not too far away from approval but in the meantime try to make sure your mother lives as healthy a life as possible in terms of diet, exercise etc and no alcohol.
Am sure you will get many replies offering support and advice.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear of your mother's illness. I see you live in Mumbai, is she under the hospital there ? There are treatments available but I dont know the situation in India. I suggest you continue to ask questions and get support here but also go along to the hospital with your mother and find out all you can about her condition.

Good Luck
