What's that smell?

My SO's liver is failing..........he has encephalopathy alot of the time - and I'm pushing the lactulose - but 1/2 the time he still thinks I'm someone else.  He hasn't known what day it it since Thanksgiving.

In the past couple of days, I've noticed that it smells like maple syrup around him?  Is it me?  What is this smell??

I posted to you just now on the other board--- but I thought I'd answer here too just in case anyone else needs info on this.

Encephalopathy can cause Fetor Hepaticus. Fetor Hepaticus is a very odd smelling breath (but it can seem like it's coming from their whole body)

It's usually described as smelling 'sweet', or 'musty sweet', or a 'sweet musty aroma', or a 'sweet pungent smell'

That, along with the confusion---- is a sign he needs to see a doctor now.

There is a condition called Maple Syrup Disease that you can find doing a google search on maple syrup disease. Something to do with the body not being able to metabolize certain amino acids.
