Liver Biopsy

Hi my husband is positive for hepatis C, Genotype 2. He had a liver biopsy last monday and we got the results yesterday. It is stage 1 grade 2. I just want to ask what does it mean by intrahepatocellular hemosiderin, because they grade it grade 2 of 4. Is it bad? His ALT is 46, ast 24, albumin 4.5, alkaline phosphatase 93. His hemoglobin is 13.7g/dl, hematocrit is 39.3%, RBC is low, 4.30m/cmm. His viral load is 8,820,000iu/ml. Thank you and i'll wait for your response.

Hi There.

When I had my biopsy, the only medication I was given was a shot to numb the area where the doctor was going to stick the biopsy needle.  The actual procedure was over very quickly.  I felt a jab in the side, but it wasn't painful.

After the procedure I laid on my back for an hour, then I sat up for an hour, and then I was discharged.  I was not given any type of sedative or pain medicine, nor was I offered any.  My wife drove me home, but I didn't feel that I was unable to drive myself.

I took the afternoon off from work, but was able to go back the next day, no problem.  I was a little sore for a few days, but there was no real pain.  I think you'll find it not at all unpleasant.  Good Luck!!

Hi,  Boy, can I identify with your anticipation.  For me, I also did not know what to expect.  So I planned a whole week off from work, bought a bunch of sandwiches to stock refrigerator, and then called a Cab.  Because during prescreening they made me sign a form saying they ,(the Clinic Doctors), were'nt responsible if I got into a traffic accident due to the sedative medication they give you just before the core sample.  My Gastro Doctor told me I could go back to work after 24 to 48 hours have elapsed.  You know now that I think about it, I dont think they would have conducted the Biopies if I did not have someone else to provide transportation to and from the Clinic.  Must tell you though, for me, the whole experience was very pleasant.  I did take a whole week off from work though, just to be on the safe side.  But thats just me.  I guess the recommended time frame one should go back to work after having a Liver Biopies conducted would depend on how strenuous the job is to begin with.  I tell you though, having had the procedure done on myself, I have to laugh at myself for having had let my mind think of the worst case senerio.  Afterwords, your left a little drowsy,  and they perscibed oxycodone for the soreness.  Did'nt really need the drug after the biopies though.  Dont let your mind run away, its not that bad a procedure, and I did need a ride home afterwords, but there was no reason to take a whole week off from work or all the pain-killers they gave me.  Good Luck.  Doons

"Hi, my husband passed a white/pale stools tonight. Is this one of the symptoms of hepatitis C ? "
---------------------------

The short answer is "yes".

However, I can't really say how serious this is and there may be other causes.

I remember very "white/pale stools" 37 years ago when I had acute Hepatitis C. In addition, my skin and eyes were yellow (jaundiced), urine was wine colored and my liver enzymes were in the thousands if I remember correctly. Of course, in those days they didn't call it Hepatitis C, just hepatitis.

I don't recollect white/pale stools in the chronic stage of the disease but maybe someone else here has had a different experience.

If you have any of the other symptons I mentioned (jaundiced skin, dark urine) I'd have him go to a doctor immediately for re-evaluation in case he's had an acute flare up. However, I would think this unlikely if he was infected 11 years ago, although I had something like an acute flare up three years ago, but I don't remember the stools going light, just my liver enzymes shooting way up from either some herbs I took and/or the hepatitis B vaccine.

In any event, why don't you call your doctor's office Monday and tell him about the stools. They should know if it's a concern or not.

As far as the gallbladder issue, I don't know.

Hi, my husband passed a white/pale stools tonight. Is this one of the symptoms of hepatitis C ? He had a HiDA WITH CCK before his biopsy and the findings was homogeneous liver uptake is present followed by biliary tree gallbladder and small bowel uptake. Gallbladder ejection fraction is 26%. Could this be related to gallbladder problem too? He'll be seeing the doctor on September 6, that's the earliest appointment we got. We're from Las vegas, Nevada. Thank you.

My husband is almost 42 yrs. old, he does not know exactly how he got it, but he's thinking he might have caught the disease when he was working in a medical lab 13 years ago. we are just a little bit concern about his liver biopsy that said his positive for intrahepatocellular hemosiderin, grade 2 of 4. Could this be iron overload? His combined Knodell HAI score is 8.

boy i wish that was me. he is in good shape. what is his age and for how long did he heve hcv? there is two sides.

one is that he treat early to avoid more damage which may never happen.

two is to wait a few years to see what improve treatments are discovered.

with 3.8 million americans with hep c there is a big push for a cure.

good luck.

He has very little liver damage. Thats really good news! Geno 2's generally have an 80% chance of being cured with 24 weeks of combination treatment (pegalayted inteferon injections plus ribavirin.) That's also good news!

Many geno 2's decide to treat right away because they have such a good chance of treatment success. On the other hand, with so little liver damage, there's really no rush. Generally speaking, this is a very slow moving disease so he could wait awhile if so inclined.

Welcome to the discussion group and feel free to ask questions whenever you want. Please keep us informed.
