And thank you very much for taking the time to give the detailed instructions on finding and using the scientific calculator ... I'm on a Mac , but to get there and use it is basically the same as a PC : )

You can approximate log reduction by removing a digit from the right, as you mentioned:
Baseline 1,000,000
-1 log 100,000
-2 log 10,000
If you have a PC, there should be a scientific calculator available:
From the start menu, click on ‘programs/all programs’
Click on ‘accessories’
Click on ‘calculator’
When the calculator opens, toggle the ‘scientific/standard’ button to scientific; this is found in the ‘view’ tab.
Then, enter your numeric viral load, and click the ‘LOG’ key; this is your viral load expressed in logarithm format.
