NOw What !!

Hello all and to start with .  i wish u all well ..  I am new here and am a carrier of the hcv .  i got infected in 2007 in hospital and did my tx immediately after .  i relapsed within 2 of finishing my tx .. so i still carry the horrid virus that makes me tired and fatigued all the time ... not to mention the side effects of the tx that i am living with  , i recently  got my liver enzimes checked and my alt was 340 and ast 120 (  they were both at 30 in december 2009 ) . i know thats really high but theres nothing i can do about it .
I do believe that there has to be other alternatives to keep the liver healthy and try to beat the virus .
i am presently using - daily  .
milk thistle +  a billberry extract pill + centrum silver + ester c + b complex + vit e + liv 52 + omega 3 .
i plan to add - nac and alpha liopic acid to the stuff above soon .
i have also recently added ( carrot + grapes + lemon oranges and an apple ) and drink a juice of all of them once daily .
I hear / read that if the bodys immune system is strong then it can reduce the viral count of hcv .. so am trying to eat and drink things to have an high antioxidant level in my body .

while doing so i came across a capsule called " fruit jiuce extreem" on amazon ,  since its not easy for me to juice everyday i thought that when i miss out on juceing i would have one of these tablets .

these tabs contain extract of - goji berry / acai berry / noni berry / mangoseem / blackberry + RESVERATROL .
Wanting to know how good all of these antioxidants were i went ahead and was just typing stuff on google trying to see what came up  ... and came across the following in regard to "RESVERATROL" NOW WHAT !!!!

"An antioxidant resveratrol significantly enhanced replication of hepatitis C virus."

Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Keio University, 35 Shinanomachi, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 1608582, Japan.

AIM: To elucidate the effect of antioxidants, resveratrol (RVT) and astaxanthin (AXN), on hepatitis C virus (HCV) replication. METHODS: We investigated the effect of recent popular antioxidant supplements on replication of the HCV replicon system OR6. RVT is a strong antioxidant and a kind of polyphenol that inhibits replication of various viruses. AXN is also a strong antioxidant. The replication of HCV RNA was assessed by the luciferase reporter assay. An additive effect of antioxidants on antiviral effects of interferon (IFN) and ribavirin (RBV) was investigated. RESULTS: This is the first report to investigate the effect of RVT and AXN on HCV replication. In contrast to other reported viruses, RVT significantly enhanced HCV RNA replication. Vitamin E also enhanced HCV RNA replication as reported previously, although AXN did not affect replication. IFN and RBV significantly reduced HCV RNA replication, but these effects were dose-dependently hampered and attenuated by the addition of RVT. AXN did not affect antiviral effects of IFN or RBV. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that RVT is not suitable as an antioxidant therapy for chronic hepatitis C.

Grapes have a high amount of  resveratrol  in them .. does this mean that my liver counts have suddenly gone up becauue i was drinking grape juice -  which increased the viral replication  !!
also should i now just throw away these capsules i bought - man i am so so so confused !!!!!

I also drink a warm glass of cocoa with milk in the mornings - does that mean i should stop having that too ... dark chocolates also contain cocoa - so stop that too !!!!!!

i would appreciate your help in answering my question and helping me clear my mind ..
I thank u in advance an hope to be a active member of the hepatitis c family here .
wishing u all well

Sorry to hear of your relapse; many of us in here have experienced similar results from HCV therapy.

You mentioned “I hear / read that if the bodys immune system is strong then it can reduce the viral count of hcv .. so am trying to eat and drink things to have an high antioxidant level in my body .”

While becoming and remaining healthy is admirable, you’ll discover that reducing viral count has very little bearing on disease progression; even *if* any of the supplements you’re taking actually help in that regard.

I had continually had very low viral load; <150,000 IU/mL, it was checked over 40 times in a five year period. I had stage 3-4 fibrosis, per liver biopsy; my story isn’t unique by any means.

My humble advice would be to eat reasonably well, avoid alcohol, and save your money for the new protease inhibitor class drugs expected to reach market in 2001. I’m not sure if you were asking for advice, but I’ll offer mine anyway :o).

Take care, and welcome to the discussion group—
