PegIntron or Pegasys-Help Please!

My physician prescribed PegIntron and gave me my fist treatment shot (he had a supply in the office). Come to find out that even after our insurance coverage, my out of pocket expense is $973 per month or PegIntron. I simply can't afford to pay this. I did some research and found that Pegasys is comparable and my copay would be $50 per month. I am also taking Ribavirin. I do not know if I can stop the PegIntron and start the Pegasys. My physician is on vacation (of course) and is due back the day I am to receive my second shot. I need some advice...should I stop taking the Ribavirin and request that my doctor prescribe the Pegasys and start over?

Whatever you do, don't skip an injection. It's not usual to switch Pegs but sounds like that may be your only alternative, and if so, I really wouldn't worry about it as their actions are similar. Maybe your doc can speak to the insurance company and override the restriction. Doctors do this all the time. But again, just don't skip an injection.

best to stick with what you have, but if you consider switching, talk to your doc about it, know what's at your advantage and disadvantage.

Well you don't want to stop the tx unless you absolutely have to, I would wait till the doctor gets back and have him change the prescription over to Pegasys.  It will be ok as he gets here the day you need your next shot.  good luck

I personally wouldn't want to stop once you've started because it would make it all a waste.  I don't think there will be a problem with changing to Pegasys once your Peg-intron runs out. They both are very similar.  My husband has taken both and the Pegasys was a much better experience for him than the Peg-intron.  There should never be any interuption time in shots or Riba.  This is a hateful virus and you can't give it any chance or it will find a way to live on.  Missing doses is a very bad idea so if you change, you've got to make sure there are no gaps in delivery.
Best wishes,
Ev
