Pegasys

Does it matter the amount of your injection dose on how hard you will be hit with sx. Is anyone here taking doses of 180 mcg or more and had no sx or minimum sx. I will start my first tx this coming Sunday. Trying very much to prepare myself nerve wise. I've had the prescription since 7/28 and have decided to start Sunday 8/6. thank you

Thank you, all so much for your response. I feeling better after reading everyones response, good luck Yvonne, congradulations dragonslayer1 on week 12 response.

So Cal, I just bought a large bottle of Tylenol PM so that I would have it onhand just in case i need it. But, I've been reading here and there that it was not good for the liver. I'm not sure what over the counter meds i should take. I guess i better ask the docter. Thanks again everyone BAW- Mondays is D-day.

I'll start on the same day. I wish us both good luck. In addition I have Vasculitis. You're right, it's the nerves. My daughter will be here for the first night, that helps a lot. Chin up for both (or all) of us

Admit to only scanning this thread==getting sleepy-- I had very few physical sx other than a general lack of energy, but it didn't stop me from much at all. I don't think too many vomit, at least not that I've talked with. Bitchiness and irritability were my most noticeable sx.

bay - I want to wish you luck Sunday.  Not all of us have reactions from the shot - I want you to know that.  In fact, for about the first two months, I had incredible energy the day after the shot.  I do the shot on Friday, thinking that I would be down the next day and ready for work Mondayd.  Instead I had all this energy all to myself and it was great.  Unfortunately, the effects of the interferon for me have been progressive.  Not that they are all that bad, but still.  I do my lat shot Friday, and am sooooo looking forward to it.

By the way, mikesimon who is taking a 1/2 dose of Pegasys says he thinks the sx are every bit as strong as the whole dose

180mgm is a normal dose for the Pegasys meds. Sides hit everyone different so try not to dwell on what might happen. Most likely the first night shot might be a bit rough but not with everyone. My first sx didn't happen for 2 weeks. I got myself worked up over nothing and you may be the same.
Good luck to you on starting tx.

I've had two 180mcg. shots of Pegasys and the side effects have been minimal.  I take the shots on Sunday nights around 8:30, then take two Tylenols right before I go to bed about 10:30.  The first time, I woke up in the middle of the night with a queasy feeling in my stomach, but went right back to sleep.

Last night, (second shot) I had no adverse effects from the shot, and have felt only slightly light-headed today.  I'm a genotype 2b, so I face only 24 weeks of treatment, fortunately.

Don't stress too much about potential sx.  Be cautiously optimistic that you will avoid many of them and keep your eyes on the prize:  good health!

Y'all are a whole lot smarter than me.  I was too dumb to even think about sx.  I figured I'd get through HVC like cancer, and broken bones - just buck up and do what they told me - pray - and keep putting one foot in front of the other.  I'm a newbie too, with 9 of 48 weeks accomplished.  Yippee!!!  My only newbie advice is to LIKE both your doctor AND the nurse.  My nurse and I didn't get along and that's where I had my most intense issues and surfed to find this forum.  Yes, it is, indeed, spiritual!!!  With the help from these kind folks, I'm seeing a new doctor and new nurse Wed. morning.  My hat is off to you both for being clever enough to get educated in advance.  This tx stuff IS do-able, so pop those caps, shoot that goo and get WELL.  Happy future SVR to ya both, Lori

I'm on 180mcg and I'm on week 12 of treatment. The first 2 weeks were fine for me, then the next 10 were bad. This week has gone surprisingly well. I do my shot Saturday at 1am (when I get home from work) and I was laid out on Sunday's usually, and sometimes into Mondays. I was actually just considering changing my dosing time 'til this week when my sides have been nonexistent, mostly.

So pretty much, it varies, I don't do any premedicating or anything, but that's been suggested here often.

Good luck and stay well!

I'm on wk 27 of 180 mcg of Pegasys.  As far as I know, the Pegsys is a single dosage tx with everyone using 180 mcg of IFN but perhaps varying dosage of riba.  Except for the sx's of reduce ANC and platelets, I have not really suffered from the Pegasys.  There are occasions the day after injections where I'm fairly lethargic and not willing to do much of anything.

If anything it is the occasional depression, rage, and the reduced Hgb with it's sx's that I've suffered more from.

The only ancillary meds I take are 80,000 U of Procrit for the Hgb, and a recent series of Neupogen for the ANC. Of course those meds have their sx's as well and I've been fortunate to not suffer too greatly from them either.

So not everyone ends up feeling the full brunt of the sx's, some which I've heard are so bad that some folks can not endure the tx because of them. But one also needs to keep in mind that tx affects everyone differently and no one can predict how a person will react to the meds until they've tried them.

The real drawback that I see to this disease is the very limited options of meds for combating it.  Unlike others, like depression, you can not try different ones to see which works best with the fewest sx's.

I do 180 mg pegasys and I'm on week 8/24 with minimal sx. The first shot was chills and shivering and body aches for about 4-6 hrs then some nausea for about 3 hrs. I did not throw up at all just queezy. I would take a theraputic dose of ibuprofen (800mg)about 2 hours after shot. Put some extra blankets water and chapstick and heating pad by your bed, just in case.

Only the first shot was bad the rest were like nothing. The riba jacks you up.
Good luck.

Thank you, for your quick response and your encouraging words and I am so sorry to hear about your sister. My condolences go out to you and to you too, mkeela. I am so so grateful that this forum is here for us all. I hate to say it but, its almost spiritual, like reading the bible, you get uplifted.

Hi Bay, I don't know about your question, but I do know what you mean by preparing yourself nerve wise. I begin on Thursday, and I am just worrying myself silly. I was wondering the same thing myself...(if the dosing amount matters w/ sides). I hope someone can answer that for you, because so far reading these posts have been my sanity and my only tool for the questions I have. (seems like we all want to know the same things before we begin) Good luck to you and God Bless!!!

Hi,
The drug is weight based so patients of varying size have about the same amount per lb, at least in theory. I can only share my experience, now in week 15. The apprehension was worse than the meds at the start. You will very likely feel like you are coming down with the flu a few hours after the shot...than you go to bed! The next day for me is just like a mild flu...sleepy and achy. The day after is better. I take mine on friday night, I'm off work every weekend.
All in all it hasn't been total misery...and liver cancer or transplant must be much worse. Don't anticipate misery...just take it day at time. I've noticed many people dwell on the sx, but just think how lucky you are to have a treatment available. My sister, also Hep-c, was allergic to interferon and passed away in 2000 from liver failure brought on by chemo for breast cancer. The disease is way scarier than the meds.
Good luck and chin up baywmn
