Please Tell Me

I just found the following unaswered post from "tellme" deep in our achives. Hopefully we can point him/her in the right direction without too much disagreement.

----------------
C69

Please tell me. I just got diagnosed with Hepatitis C, genotype 1, stage 2. Should I treat or not? Is the 4-week PCR really necessary?
What about Peg Intron versus Pegasys? Do you suggest I wait for Vertex? Is there really an occult virus? What about herbs? Milk thistle? Botox? Is it OK to drink socially before and after treatment? Does Brian fog really exist and where does he live? My doctor wears bow ties, is that reason enough to switch. Is it true that some consider fudgicles helper drugs? Tell me, please tell me.

My father is 98, he'll be 99 in a few months. Until 43 he drank and smoked (not a real lot though, and he ate okay, but not half as good as he does now.) People think he's in his early mid 70s and in very good physical shape.

Then he met my mother and he figured he better change his lifestyle if he wanted to keep up with a woman who was 22 years his junior. At that point he began exercising regularly, quit smoking, drinking for the most part unless it was a glass of wine with dinner, that's all. He eats what he feels is good and good for him.

He eats plenty of cooked beans, lots of beans....veggies, fruits all day like a woodland animal, you can see him frequently eating an apple, or peeling an orange. He will have a slice of pizza, but not that often. He says, and I agree with him, when you become used to eating well, sometimes greasy pizza just tastes greasy. Your palate changes and you want healthy food, just like your palate changes when youre on tx I imagine.

My mom makes plenty of veggie meals, that are really good, it's not always about eating tofu and dry rice. Giant veggie salads with a bit of cheeze and healthy crackers, homemade veggie soups with a bit of butter and dark bread,  Veggie stews with a bit of chicken, they like goat cheese, ha ha!

My dad is eating about every three hours, fruit and walnuts or almonds, whatever a bit of cheese, he's not totally veggie or anything, but he does eat healthy. Red meat hardly ever, mostly fish with great sauces, and broiled chicken, etc and of course, torn tortillas!...but I think what makes the difference for him is how many veggies and fruits he eats, all those healthy enzymes.

At 98 my father is still riding his bike at the beach, playing golf 4 to 5 days a week...granted it's 9 holes instead of 18, but he rarely uses a golf cart. He has been enjoying his retirement at 65 for a helluva long time now. Guys like him are probably Social Security's worst nightmare.

When he goes to the doctors they are totally blown away by him cause the most that's wrong with him is beginning cataracts, he's got better health then many of them, because there's no arthritis, etc. (even though he's broken his back when young, and a few limbs)

He had a bad car wreck a few years ago, and the docs told us in the ER that no man his age would get through something like that alive, or very rarely, so they weren't hopeful (he had torn a big artery in his stomach...my mom and me knew better though, he was out of the hospital in 5 days, to convalece at his home, the docs said they were going to report it it was such a mind blower to them.

He's now taking lessons to ride a Segway and buy one, but I think my mom is going to put her foot down on that.

I'm convinced that even though my dad can be a big pain in the a$$, he is probably responsible for keeping my my mom alive till 77, because my mom loves to eat junkfood, and he wont allow her to do it that much. (Once in awhile, but not much.) And she walks regular long walks with him at the beach.

None of my Mom's family lived beyond their mid-fifties, none. (And since I'm nearing my mid-fifties...that's sounds pretty darn young young to die, at least to me.) When people tell my dad well, its probably your good genes, he says, "Yeah, I think I have good genes, but only one of my 5 brothers and sisters lived beyond their 60's, and most of them had health issues." None of my Dad's brothers and sisters had his lifestyle.

I think they saved my younger sister's life too, because when she went to go stay with them a few years ago after an alcohol and drug run that left her with ESLD and almost dead, they made sure she ate like them, and she's here almost 4 years later to talk about it. They all take long walks at the beach together.

So I see what diet and exercise can do in my immediate family, up close and personal, it's not just quantity of life, but quality of life as well.

Well here's the extent of my knowledge and precautions (at least definite ones)with diet. Back when they first started making a big deal about cholestorol I told my father and one of his brothers they shouldn't eat so many eggs. Especially the way my father fried his bacon first and the cokked the eggs in the grease. They both burst out laughing and informed me that my grandfather, who was a healthy bull to his mid 90's... woke each morning and had 3 eggs fried in bacon grease, then drank another raw egg or 2. He'd go to work, come home and take the leftover grease from the morning, fry 2 more eggs and bacon in it, cover it in maple syrup, dip his bread in  the grease and syrup, have another raw egg or eggnog, and go wait for supper.(his father lived to 104 and taught him that. Now granted Grandad spent the first half of his life as a lobster fisherman for the family's cannery in Prince Edward Island, then came down here and worked 30 years in a brass mill in Bridgeport atone of the toughest jobs in the mill, only missing one day of work. So he probably had good genetics.
When they finished telling me I said...well that nails it, no eggs or bacon for me...My uncle asked why. I said ..'if I'm not mistaken Grandpa also got Grandma pregnant 16 times while she was between the ages of 16 and 36. I ain't taken no chances.'
Didn't want the yoke to be on me.
