Poor

I have HCV and was diagnosed about 4 years ago. My liver enzymes have only been elevated once or twice and only slightly elevated. I don't have insurance now so I try to stay healthy so that I don't have to go to the doctor too often. And I can't afford a specialist.

Anyway, here's my question that I need advice with. And it may be serious, it may not. I'm not sure. Starting 6 days ago I've had pitting edema (water retention) in my ankles and feet. No other strange symptoms. Just that. Of course, when I get online and search they're always talking about liver failure, etc. I', not jaundice anywhere. It just scared the **** out of me and I wanted to know of anyone had any advice or similar experience with this?

hi, in reading the other posts, I should add that you definitely need to get this checked out, of course we aren't doctors here and from what I know about this disease, it can be all over the place in terms of symptoms and everything else for that matter...

I just wanted to point out that on the HCV symptoms page at Janis, which is one of the most comprehensive I've seen, this is listed as a symptom of Hep C that is in the non-cirrhotic section...other then that, by all means, please be seen by a hepatologist or a gastro that specialized in hep c, there are many liver clinics at teaching hospitals, etc, that do have sliding scale...be persistent if you have to, sometimes it takes that from a patient...tell whomever that you have no recourse and that you are heavily symptomatic and you need to be seen by a specialist, this has worked for many I know...

Hi Chuckie, I had posted an answer to this question earlier, guess this is bugging a lot of people with hep c...anyway, if you go to the symptoms page on the Janis and Friends website,

http://janis7hepc.com/Symptoms.htm  (this is on the non-cirrhosis hep c syptoms section)....

Fluid Retention: Fluid retention occurs when your body holds on to more water than it needs. The extra water leaks into the tissues. If you have fluid retention, you may notice swelling of your feet, ankles, fingers, and/or face. People with fluid retention often have frequent urination, especially at night.

I think my fluid retention is complicated by being in menopause as well, the two are tag-teaming me, ha ha! Anyway, hope this helps...be well...remember, there are many ways to get around the financial thing, especially with someone like you who obviously has access to the net, do some researching, maybe someone will come by with some ideas...be well....

Hey kiddo, I can't believe you're almost done! Wow, the older I get the quicker time goes...I will always kick myself for not just keeping up the tx, I would have been done soon too probably...but it was the rash from hell, the heart flutters (that later turned out to be ok but I still wonder because of the esophagus problem) but so far, my liver is still ok...my stomach is the bigger issue (if you can imagine a bigger issue than HCV)...I have to try to get the inflamation down and I don't think that would be easy on tx, or would it I wonder? I will ask the doc...but he keeps waving me off when I mention tx...oh well...How have you been feeling? Good I hope.

Hey girl, good of you to pop in.  Still not tough enough to try txing again, eh -- what was it again, the mega riba rash from hell?   I am glad to see you are still hanging in there.  Still got the fairy getup?  Your daughter may just work herself up into a decent human being -- it is just so hard to pass the addiction stage to see the world clearly.  Best of luck on that.

I am almost done - shot 52/56 tomorrow -- added a few extra weeks since I wasn't clear at 12.

Just another example of my brain drain, I can't remember the name of who asked the question, I forgot it when I was finding my password to sign on since it's been so long...Anyway, hello out there, it's been a while since I checked in and I figured it was time.

Dude, you should definately get that checked out, any kind of water retention should be checked out...esspecially in the lower legs. Go to the ER if you have to.

The good news is my daughter (the one that has the HCV too) has had an Epiphany, she is off the Suboxone for 1 1/2 weeks now, she is 100% drug free as we speak. She is still waking up from her 10 trip down substance abuse lane but it's a start.

Funny how things work, she got in a fight w/ her regular docs office staff, nothing big, but they must have complained and sure enough she got the 'letter' saying 30 days and you're done...so she procrastinates to the point of having to be off the Suboxone for 1 day before her appt. w/ the new doc who happens to be big on detoxing and taking care of the HCV/other medical problems...He makes her come once a week, go to alanon 6 times a week and does all kinds of blood tests, she is finding out she had stomach problems too this whole time...hereditary? Hmmm...anyway, at least now she will get the HCV thing checked out...

And I am still holding out, not doin tx, on stomach meds to keep the acid down and that's about it...How is everybody out here? What have I missed?

Oh, I figured out how somebody can find you in this forum (a total stranger that has your email address for whatever reason, good or bad) by your email address, type it in the bar, it brings up this forum and any time you put your email in (I think, I hope it's not by typing in just the email address, YIKES). And add paranoid to the forgetful list...

Don't give up, Kailo1 gave you some good advice. Might be a good ideal to end your salt intake. Till you find out whats going on.... Wishing you the best. Even with out insurance the ER has to see you.

Pitting edema really needs to be evaluated. You are correct, it could be serious, it could be not so serious. I know you are uninsured but you have got to get to the doctor and be evaluated. I don't know where you are located or what services are available but find a clinic that has a sliding scale or call the hospital and ask them for any suggestions. If you can not find one, go to ER.
Good luck.
