Prilosec + Hep C

During the discovery of my Hep C
infection this year I was also dx
with superficial duodenal ulcer
and sliding hiatal hernia.For some
reason my stomach produces to
much acid.Been trying to combat
this with diet and lifestyle but it
is not going away.Get strong burning
left and right from the middle below
ribs.Been going back and forth blaming
either Hep C or acid reflux for symptoms.
I have been avoiding PPIs like Prilosec because
I was told it can increase viral load.

Is anybody taking Prilosec and knows if it is ok to take with Hep C ?

Can it influence ALT,VL ect...

just went out and got myself a 14 day course of generic Omeprazole (best buy)

and started taking it again.keep my fingers crossed.

usually any discomfort related to hiatal hernia and acid reflux is on the left side

Right this minute I feel pressure to the right. All I can think of is that maybe

because I sleep on the right side that somehow acid  effected some nerves over there.

Who knows ? When I asked Dr. Zhang he said it is the gallbladder that usually

causes pain because liver has no nerves. If you read my ultrasound from Germany

(same people that did my FibroScan) it is picture perfect: Aug 20th 2009

Liver: good assessability, normal size (137x130mm),normal configuration of organ, homogenous and echo-normal parenchymal structure,no focal leisons,
no pathological findings of vascular architecture

Gallbladder:  without concrement and without wall thickening

Biliary tracts: good assesability,no evidence of any intra or extra hepatic extension of biliary tracts , no prove of gall stones

Pancreas: all sections with good assessability, organ not enlarged, paranchyma is homogenous , pancreas duct not extended

Spleen: good assessability , normal size, ( 110mm,depth 28m echo normal
homogenous internal reflection pattern , no focal changes.

Kidneys both kidneys orthotropic position, normal size, parenchyma edge according to age, smooth organ contour, no urine congestion, no concrements.

Retroperitoneal abdominal
vascular system:    The aorta with its exits including iliac arteries, the vena cava inferior
including iliac veigns as well as portal-venous system are all without pathological findings.

Duplex:  Venae portae (10mm) : normal hepato-petal flow, v max=20 cm/sec.

Stomach-intestinal tract: no pathological findings of small and large intestine,
no pathological cockade , normal peristalis.

Lymph nodes: with limited assessability no findings, no proof of enlarged abdominal
lymph nodes.

Other: no ascites

I feel like this report belongs to a different person.

How fast can things turn bad with HepC when you follow the rules (no alcohol, organic
diet,supplements ect...) ?

This is now 2.5 mo. ago.

Prilosec and Nexium are very similar. Nexium is Prilosec that has been slightly modified.

Was on nexium now on prilosec, theres also prevacid that will soon be over OTC too. Some do better then others on these. As for viral load didn't matter mine went way up and went down, as a matter of fact when i started my last tx it was lower then it had ever been. Was it the prilosec? No

Good luck to you............can

still prefer lower VL and it does not just flactuate on it`s own.

if we do not know what causes it to flacuate than that is something else.

I hear stress and immunity is a factor therefore additional meds can play a role to

if one considers Tx you want to start with low baseline so it does have

some value  though no garantees like everything else with this disease,

Did try with much reluctance Priosec for a week back in March.
Did not know about Hep C yet. For some reason back than
the burning seemingly got worse from it.

I will try it again maybe try Nexium instead of Prilosec ?

Does anybody know of any difference between the two ?

PPIs don't have any negative effects on the liver and don't raise viral load. They are the best medications for increased  GI acid production/ulcers and should really help you with your symptoms. They are worth a try.

Viral load just fluctuates on its own, usually independently from anything we do or don't do. My husband's viral load all of a sudden went from  23 mln to 2 mln-and we didn't do anything different when it happened. Also, at the time when the viral load went down, he started feeling worse.

My point is, if your viral load will increase after PPIs, it is not because of PPIs. The same goes for decrease.

I've taken prilosec for GERD and Barrett's Esophagus for years -- my hepatologist has never objected.

I've been taking nexium for over 7 years now and they were prescribed by my GI. My ALT's are normal now which were high before nexium. My VL was 2.000.000 then and now is 565.000, so I would not worry about raising anything and take medicine. I also have a hiatal hernia and Gerd. My test results over the years which I get often tell me that nexium (same drug as prilosic) are not causing any problem at all.
