Hi, this is an extremely old thread, Elizabeth hasn't posted here since 2007. If you have a question about shingles, please start a new question for the forum.
I did get the shingles while on interferon and ribaviran about 10 years ago. My whole immune system went down the drain. Also had thrush so bad I could not swallow. I almost died and ended up with pneumonia and they stopped it after 4 months. Worst time in my entire life.
The common denominator is the compromise to your immune system. Having and battling Hep C places a sizable stress on your immune system which is what keeps the herpes virus dormant. Basically, anything that weakens your immune system can lead to an outbreak.
To clarify, chicken pox is caused by a herpes virus and behaves the same way any other herpes virus does.
Hope this helps.
My father had singles. It is from the chicken pox as someone stated. But, what makes them surface is STRESS. The two most common places that shingles appear are near the eye and around the abs/waistband area. They are very irretating and will itch like crazy. The only way to get rid of this is to see your doctor and let him prescribe med. With my father, his was around his eye and it was bad. They thought he was going to loose his eye sight. He had to stay in bed with no lights, no reading, almost immobile for weeks this did put him in a deep depression, he is a very active man and just could not take the solitude he had to endure. Shingles will not get better unless you have it treated by a doctor. So a doctors appt is very necessary. You do not want this to get out of control, you will be the most miserable person in the world if that happens. Nip this in the bud.
Good Luck,
Cajun
Elizabeth,,,yea I really don't think hep and shingles together go hand in hand, You probably just happen to have both which is sorry, I know my mother in law had shingles and she said it is no fun,,,,Good Luck!
Hi Beth,
What? Shingles? Do you have it? I'm hoping it's what is called on the forum "riba rash." Are you familiar with this? What with pleurisy...bronchial infections...txing and other serious medical conditions..I sure hope that it is the rash caused by the ribaviron...which can be very itchy. I left my phone at work...otherwise I would call you. I'll have to wait 'til tomorrow. Did you get your hair done...I know that was something you were lookin' forward to...but don't know what happened to you since.... I really hope you are ok..and not stressing yourself out.
Good night, dear
Yvonne
Cajun is exactly right about the stress factor and shingles and fatigue and a weakened immune system also increases your chances. Since shingles is a virus, the only meds that help, besides pain meds and itch meds, are anti-virals started early. Also shingles will follow a nerve root, like Cajun described. My daughter had them across her back, I've seen them mainly around the stomach, but even down the knee. If you have shingles, you can give chicken pox to someone who's never been exposed or vaccinated. So be careful who you come in close contact with.
Good luck,
Bug
I've known people with shingles but none had hepc.
I don't remember anybody here ever reporting that they had developed a case of shingles from this disease anymore so than getting rabies or something.
Don't sweat possibilities that don't really exist. That can make you go crazy.
1st, let me say thanku. & yes i know that it comes from chick. pox. but what i was needing 2 know if there was anyone out there that has had the shingles since theyv'e had hep c, or since they have been on the treatments 4 hep c? i thoght @ 1 time i read somewhere that the shingles & the hep c virus were related in some way. but can't remember now. elizabeth
Shingles come from chicken pox not hep. Does that help?
