Swimming pools, Chlorine, and Skin Problems

Thinking of starting to work out in an indoor swimming pool. Wondering if anyone on treatment -- or post treatment -- has worked out in a chlorinated pool and how it affected their skin. I also have psoriais and seborrhoeic dermatitis. Been off the treatment drugs for about six weeks now.

Sadly, most of my muscle has turned to mush.

I've been getting in the pool at least a couple of times a week (followed by hot tub).  Even when I don't feel like a real workout, the cool water really makes me feel better (especially headaches).

I had riba rash early on and hit it hard with moisturizers, etc.  It went away and I haven't had huge skin problems (I'm diligent with moisturizers still).

The pool seems to have no effect on me.  I always shower afterward and rub Burt's Bees Vitamin E oil on my body during my shower.  Then follow with moisturizer.  No problems.

Besides, inhaling that Chlorine might enhance the riba...

Oh I have been checking the temp in the pool EVERYDAY because it looks sooooo inviting!  I too was wondering what the chemicals and chlorine would do to me.  I am thinking of swimming early morn before the sun really comes out.  Nights are almost impossible here in a couple of weeks due to mesquitos.  Them suckers are as big as cows down here on the coast!

I figure a cool shower after a swim and really pile the gold Bond on after the shower.  What cha think?

Oh.....forgot, the lotion is can-do's job, my cabanna boy!

I have a pool and have been swimming some the last two weeks.  It hasn't seemed to bother my skin.  I always shower right after and greese up real good.

Haven't been able to do laps yet, hopefully soon after tx.  Sadly, most of my muscle has turned to mush.

Best of luck.  Let us know how it goes.  Swimming is a passion for me, I'd hate to think I if I couldn't do it anymore.

I took a form of water aerobics during tratment and saw no adverse effects from the clorinated water.  I did not swim laps because of fear of ear infections and other winter-related infections at a public pool, with low ANC, but would not be afraid to after tx.

My hubby's psoriasis has kicked into high gear with the summer weather.  It was almost non-existent during the winter long pants weather, but is back now.  Curious since sunlight is supposed to be good for it - but it seems to hve the opposite reaction.  Does the sunlight negatively affect you too?

Fisheress -- what are you waiting for?  Jump on in.  I think the early morning swim is a great idea.  I am envious of ya'll with pools!

Funny you should bring up that question. I have a pool as well, and an outdoor shower next to it, near the oyster bar, by the Jacuzzi and Sauna room, next to the stairs that lead up to the massage room and racquetball building. My butler usually takes care of putting the Gold Bond on my back, since my girlfriend left me for Fabio, but I find that too personal, so I use a sponge on a plastic handle (usually used for cleaning toilets), and I smear some Gold Bond on that, so I can then reach my back.

I shower off immediately after swimming and run into my bedroom, step out onto the balcony where's there's more light and birds singing, and while my butler brings me a nice tall glass of carrot juice, I slap on the Gold Bond Extra cream all over my soon to be bronze body.

My doctor said that this is the solution to stop the insurmountable and exploitive, irritating itching, which I have a lot of three weeks post treatment. Sadly, he said as long as I have Hep C, I will have the itching (but not this bad) and Insomnia, which I plan to tackle next.

For sleep, instead of ingesting the heavier chemicals found in sleeping pills (which some could be addictive), I take anti-histamines. It really helps with the itching and makes you groggy and sleepy. Naturally, you should be careful on a long term basis, and always ask your Gastro first. My dermatologist has prescribed Doxepin 25mg once a day at bedtime. Hope this info helps...
