What is the scientific term for HCV ?

For example, the avian virus is H5N1.....

Just wondering. Can't find it on the web ANYWHERE...

The reason I ask is a friend of mine who is one of those smart biology/chemistry types, was explaining how virus's work and how the berd floo, for example,  H5N1 has 5 'spikes' that can infect other cells, but said he did't know the scientific notation for the
HCV virus but that EVERY virus was expressed scientifically in this manner.

Started to read your link, and was startled by the first sentence. I had always thought Chiron bought the patent rights, rather than doing the original research themselves.
Now I'm going to be googling when I should be wrapping.
