How to identify new postings?

What is the best way to find out which threads received new comments? Just scroll down all threads and look to the date? This is uncomfortable. It would be nice to open a window "new messages", as it is common in other lists. What s your way to check that?

This same sentiment has been posted a few times in the last few days.

There currently is no feature like this.  Also, receiving a notification that there were 500 new posts wouldn't help very much.  In the past there were DRASTICALLY less threads and therefore posts and it might have been possible but now...there are way too many for it to even matter.

It isnt' that hard to scroll down and notice which threads were posted to in a day, by the date. If we were to change it, it seems to me it would change the whole format of the forum, which I like.

Good idea. Even if threads with new posts were highlighted/in bold like on some forums, it would make navigation easier.

there are several postings to a thread from the same day. Your proposal works fine, but only if you look to the list only once a day, at midnight.

Lactoferrin is always mentioned when holistic doctors speak of hcv. its also in whey protein. Interesting to read about it in this product below. I'm not endorsing this product haven't even  tried it.I think lactoferrin's ability to bind to iron may be the reason it may be helpful for peopel with hep to take.Of course checking with their doctor first is important. But of course if someone is low in iron, it may have its risks? Though this site below is pushing a product, I have read several articles in my newsletters and magazines of its benefits.

That is true, but no matter when you post or look you can see the dates. What bothers me about not getting the most recent posts is that newbies get lost if they post on threads that were written even a day before, or even that same day if they are on the bottom. I think I would like to see an example before I "decided". LOL like it's my choice. I just don't want to mess with a good thing. Of course there are issues and problems, but the cure could be worse.

It does get a little frustrating, but I'm to the point I don't want to stress over it, so I scroll down to a certain point and go no further, so who knows what I'm missing out on as far as info. My way is not the way to approach the problem, but its like being in a thick forest and lost lately.Alot of times people have a thread open and then open another just to ask another question. maybe they don't know they can ask on the original thread they opened. But what sfgirl said about the cure can sometimes be worse is true.

So I'm a relative newbie, so treat this as newbie speak.

The current structure works well, but there are features common in current bulletin board software that might actually be an improvement.

- Its effectively impossible to preserve a discussion over time. If someone has updated information for a discussion that started one or more days ago, there's no point in adding to the old thread which is now buried. If old threads with new posts are bumped to the top, the entire thread is preserved.

- There are so many common newbie questions that could be answered in one or more 'sticky' FAQ threads that ALWAYS stay at the top. These sticky threads can be locked, or restricted to moderator update.

- Having simple private messaging between users on our board would really help keep a lot of the random/off topic/etc stuff out of the threads. It also provides a method of private communication without the need to disclose email addresses.
Its so easy to send & receive PMs, and they really help reduce the noise level :-)

- Not sure we want this, but notification by email is certainly an option. This is not the mail storm generator you might expect. Notification usually only happens when a new post is added to a thread that YOU have posted to.

There's more, but the thing is that we can choose the features that make sense for the community. Try 'em, change 'em if we hate 'em.

Make your donations so that all these wiz-bang fancy features can be added.  It seems like everyone has loads of ideas but unwilling to pay or work to make it happen.

It's ironic to see all these post complaining about to many posts.

If it hurts when you do something, and you don't want to hurt, then simply don't do it!

Otherwise, bite your tongue, but please clean up your blood if you are still infected.

First, the bulletin board software I'm talking about is free. It's open source - the board and the database. Runs on any Windows or Linux server.

Second, I'm ready to help and I'm sure others are too. Its not that hard to set up. The big challenge is figuring a was to migrate the current threads across, which will be a challenge :-)

With so many many forums on the net - one that has the features is probably around.

Since we don't PAY for this forum - suggestions that relate to MONEY and UPGRADES really seem a bit inappropriate to ME.  I am sure since they monitor this HUGE set of forums...they are smart enough to know what is available and it's not just some selfish - I dont want to give it to them logic.

It must cost MONEY.

Things get either technically archived -- or "virtually" archived so fast anyway -- that a good interim solution would be to simply leave the current archives as is -- with links to it -- and then start afresh. Later, the older achives could possibly be integrated into the new software at a leisurely pace if desired.

As you said, a lot of this software is free and requires no additional programming. Even UBB threads is not particularly expensive and comes with technical support package options.

As to your concerns about "mail box clutter" on subscribed threads -- with the software I've seen, you would only get an email if you elected to be notified when someone posted to your thread. More elegant, is electing to subscribe to individual threads. In any event, I've always set up a separate email address -- a free Yahoo, Gmail, etc -- for all discussion group mail. That keeps it separate from personal and business so clutter isn't an issue.

Like I said in another thread, based on my experience both as a member -- and co-owner -- of discussion groups, almost any major change of software will initially be greeted negatively because people get used to and comfortable with something.  But invariably , within a month or two, no one would want to go back to the previous software. At least that has been my experience.

To be quite honest, being an old "Dos" geek, I fought Windows for years retaining as many Dos programs as possible. Can you imagine going back to Dos now :) Does anyone even remember DOS. LOL.
