for those with kids check this out About Swifter Wetjet floor cleaner

For those of you with animals......

I recently had a neighbor who had their 5-year old German shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago. They had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind.

The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe.

My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. (Actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze).

Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver.

Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure.

They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on their floors.

Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many people as possible.

This is a prime example why you can't believe what you hear on the internet!! Whether it be chemicals, food, HCV, you just never know....It is kind of like buyer beware without even shopping!!!!

We have this printed for the people we adopt dogs out to. We get asked this a lot.

This website is really good to use for all the emails you get these types of claims.

Doncha just love snopes?

But...even if this isn't true...it is a terrifically good idea to limit the amount of chemicals in use in the home. Think of it; if something is bad for the environment then it's bad for us too. We're part of the environment. There are benevolent cleaners out there from environmentally responsible companies.

Just one of my fav soapboxes. Along with being nice to one's liver.

Happy Turkey Day tomorrow Everyone!!

I agree....I purchased a steam cleaner.....I love it. It uses only steam to clean so no chemicals at all. I recommend to everyone...get one. It is great. (no I don't sell them for a living either. I just love it)

If you go to the ASPCA and the Humane Society sites you will be given facts about this claim. It has not been proven true. This is a rumor only, based on anecdotal experience. The ASPCA states that there is no truth to this claim, they have had no reports of this happening to pets. Please investigate any emails that you receive or claims based on anecdotes, be it about HCV of Swiffer.

Hey there girl....mmmm steamed broccoli

I work with different rescues and legislative organizations around the country to help place dogs and fight for their rights...blah blah blah. My husband and I have 3 of our own and we usually have 1 temporary that we work with and train before placing. It's my little duty to the doggie world.

The steaming machines are the way to go for easy easy easy cleaning...even my hubby will clean if he gets to use the machine. it's fun. (easy enough to use...even a cop can use it)

......*wink*....*wink*.....

How you feeling these days?

I recieved that same e-mail. I second Cuteus advice to investigate before accepting any e-mail at face value. I had no reason to investigate this one since I'm not familiar with the product mentioned.

There was a simiar claim about Fabreeze when it became popular, those reports were also founded false. Check the chemical chain of peg-interferon, there's propylene glycol; which is an active ingredient in anti-freeze. Aren't we using this to treat liver disease, so go figure. Peace

That was posted as though it was your personal experience. Odd that I should should get an e-mail with the exact same wording don't you think?

This is an old urban legend and according to "Snoopes.com" , "about.com" and other such web sites is false.

No accusations, but as Scruffy suggests, you should not put forth stories floating around the internet as your personal experience unless it is.

Bless you're heart Deb...Our four legged friends need all the advocates they can get...Bravo to you and your husband!

I am okay, seem to be feeling the effects of the herb regimen and it has only been 6 weeks, well 6 weeks with this new Doc that I have, guiding me through the alternative approach...I feel less fatigued and my liver pain is gone! Hip hip hurry, first time in a year it is gone!!

We have a steam cleaner, it's a carpet cleaner...But it's big and bulky and I can't imagine cleaning the floors on a regular basis with it...I was thinking about getting a house keeper for awhile, but I may not now since I am getting some energy back...The "cop" clean?? hahaha...You're a funny gal!! He would get a housekeeper before he had to help around here...He does other things that I prefer over house work anyway *wink*

*dirty dip* lol

Thanks so much for the info. I have two small dogs that of course clean their feet repeatedly, one has a compulsion regarding it. I do have hardwood floors in some areas and this is what I have used but only on a few occasions. That thing goes out to trash today. I think now I need to read what Murphy's oil soap has in it as this is what I use mostly. (Except since tx haven't used anything except husband damp mops)

my post should have the conjunction "or" not of in there, grr!
as for whether he is for real, I reserve judgement, since I remember not too long about Dean from down under starting a thread on Colloidal silver and he was taking it...blah blah. I and others thought he was a snake oil salesman and jumped on him, but we were proven wrong. He was just blinded with the brightness of silver, and is now on tx, with a new beautiful baby in his family. Let's just see what happens.
Thinking of you and worrying about your tx...Gene.
take care

...do I go with the lumpy cranberries or the jellied sauce.....?

Regardless, your heart was in the right place and thanks for passing along some information that could have been very important to all of us. I've stopped opening unsolicted email a long time ago, but when I do get emails like this passed along from friends, I generally first head to "snoopes.com" to check it out. Have a great Thanksgiving holiday.

Well goof...you can use the steam on your cabbage patch but you can't use it on your "Sour Kraut" it may get hurt.

....and you better watch out because those flaps have a rythm all their own....

and yes of course you know lumpy is waaaay better. Although mixed in a food processor using whole cranberries, apples, oranges and tad bit of sugar gives a lovely taste too.....and no plopping later on.

deb in az.....chuckling...sourkraut...chuckling again
