Hi there, while I am not a doctor I would think it is possible to hit a nerve
To hit the muscle you would have had to put the needle in straight into the leg vs under the skin. Also the needles we use are not really long enough to go far into the muscle. I am sorry you are going through this. I know how hard it is when one is on tx.
Good luck
i called before a hepatologist at a transplant center, and he said the interferon will work even if i hit the muscle.
it is just possible that it maybe doesnt last that long as when injected subcutan.
would i feel pain if i hit a muscle?
because i have no pain at the area where i injected, and i did the injection as always and iam realy not sure i hit the muscle or not.
i asked today my family doc and she said it should be no problem.
Quite honestly if you truly believe you may have administered your Peg into your muscle then I would call the Pegasys hot-line.

It sounds as if you are curious if PEG-IFN alfa-2a would have the same efficacy and half-life if administered intramuscular (IM) rather than subcutaneously (SQ).
So you may want to ask them about that as well. Meanwhile I let someone with more knowledge than me specifically address that question.
I did see that that PEG-IFN alfa-2a can be administered IM however there may be an formulation specifically for that use rather than the pre-filled syringes.

It truly does not sound as if you injected into the muscle. I have had IM injections before and your thigh would feel so different right now if you injected the needle all the way into your muscle. I mean you have no idea. It would require more pressure and exertion of the plunger than it does the SQ way.
Hang in there♫
The Pegasys site has this:
Please note that the needle supplied with the PEGASYS pre-filled syringe is for subcutaneous injection only and is not suitable for any other type of injection (e.g. intramuscular injection)

Hopefully others will chime in and share their experiences & insight.
Thanks for your answer,
So you think even I injected in the muscle, the interferon would still working?
Where are all the nurses when you need them?
The difference is not so much whether the Interferon would be working as opposed to how rapidly absorbed the medication would be. Intramuscular (IM) injection is more rapidly absorbed as opposed to subcutaneous. In general, the fatter the area, the slower the absorption.
*I will let someone else copy and paste a bunch of links since I am my phone. Hopefully Pooh will log on and explain my understanding better.
I'm not sure about the thigh twitch however I do know it is NOT that easy to inject in the muscle as it sounds. You would really have to exert a lot of pressure as opposed to how easily the needle slides in subcutaneously (under the skin) or even intradermally.
Plus, your thigh would be sore relative to little pain you say you felt when you injected. Too me, intramuscular injections are way more painful and not very easy to self-administer.
Check out this image. The Interferon shot is the one in the middle or subcutaneous.

Always remember to hold the skin the way it is shown in this image:
