low body temperature

Are there any other members that have a normal thyroid function, YET always have a low body temperature? If you are SVR did the temperature go back to normal? My thyroid is fine, yet the low temp seems to be a problem. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem or ever took their temp in the morning to see. My temp is always low at the doctors and thats when I started to check it daily again.

I just can't figure out why it stays so low.

Thanks,
MO

My body temp has always run low (96.9 - 98.2).  Thyroid function is normal.  This is ongoing, for years before tx.  Noticed it while hospitalized for cancer tx, it occurs at all times of day.  My MDs tell me there is a range of "normal" and I run in the low end.

Mine also,  low body temp and low blood pressure, even pre HCV, sometimes it is genetic.    My Mother was the same.   Thyroid has always been ok.  even during tx.

I guess this makes us a couple of cool customers, unesxpected for a hot-blooded Italian and a hot tempered Irishwoman!  How've you been?  I had that wicked headache yesterday, finally caved in and took something OTC (which I hate to do) so today my head's better but I'm a bit groggy.

Funny you should mention that....the other day I checked my temperature, midday, and it was a whopping 96.0 degrees!  Nice number!  I had been feeling funky, and having what I think is an autoimmune flareup, red cheekbones, painful joints, headache, etc.  Apparently no infection going on there!

I have had low body temperature over the years, even before tx, and I would ascribe it to HCV, and the autoimmune effect that it has on the body.  Maybe it also alters the function of our regulatory glands, beyond the Thyroid.  The Pituitary has been discussed recently, and maybe the HCV, and also the tx, has some effect on its ability to regulate the body temp.

I do have very mild hypothyroid, but it has been fully corrected and under control with Synthroid, for over four years now, so I should not have these low temps.  I am usually somewhere from 96.0 to 97.5 when I check my temperature.  Usually the lower it goes, the lousier I feel.  I often think I am getting an infection, or virus, and it turns out the temperature is near 96 degees.  I assume its autoimmune in nature.

I hate that stuff, too.  Sometimes I have to go that route and this weekend was one of them.

My Godmother is Italian, so I have sort of honarary status.

Did you notice the low temp thing while hospitalized, too?  They're forever checking vitals or I would never have known.  I almost never take my own temp at home unless I'm really ill, do you?

JD the same,  they kept saying her blood pressure and body temp are so low,  my daughter and hubby kept saying it always is, my daughter is the same, she made them take hers also, so they would see.

The worse is when they wake you up at 600 am after finally going to sleep, to draw blood!

Well, just spoke to the doctor, hgb back down to 9.2.  Back on the Procrit, she says for the duration.  Yippee!

Yeah, and surgical rounds are sooooo early.  My cancer surgeon was an instructor and he's bring a whole flotilla of students into my room at 5 am.  They reminded me of Donald Duck's nephews!  But great doctors should be training new docs and he always got me a private room so after the vampires came and left I could get back to sleep.  All in all, gotta love the guy!

I am on procrit already, my hemo last week was 9. see Doc tomorrow and pretty sure he up.

Sort of scared he will want to take me off tx, or lower riba, I am 200  over body weight now.

But if he lowers it, by 200 I will only be on 800 and that is line that anything under is not effective.

Oh Jd for sure! They used to make rounds so early! Then  a couple of  my Docs would come back to hear what my morphine dreams were, there was some doosys!

My favorite was one student who always wore scrubs and had the most magnificent butt.  On all the morphine they gave me, I'd wake up at 5 am, see this guy standing next to the bed and all I wanted to do was reach out and pat that butt, just to be sure it was real!

Don't let them lower the Riba if you can possibly talk him out of it.

One of my favorite Docs, had the cutest rosiest cheeks, he like 15!

Thank heavens you opened this post.  I am so struggling with this very issue.  To date my thyroid tests have been normal but my body temp is 35.5 - 36, never higher.  My blood pressure is usually about 104.  I feel sluggish and my weight has crept up.

I really don't know if I have a hormonal problem or I'm just getting older and I need to get off my @ss and exercise more to get my metabolism up.  So I'm trying the latter and I'll see what happens.

All your posts very interesting, thanks.

I know what you mean, I'm always kicking myself because I sit around the house like furniture, but with the low BP and severe anemia every time I try working out I wind up in hospital being threatened with transfusion.  When I can swim I do it, seems like I can do that without completely screwing up my whole system - maybe because I'm not fighting gravity and feel completely at home in the water.  Do you have access to a heated pool?

You are in the UK, yes?  Which part?  I used to work for a company with HQ in Croydon so I'd get to London quite a bit - love it there.

my temp is low, usually around 96-97. like DD posted i think this has to do with HCv & the immune system.

That's weird.  I just went through some sort of episode that felt like flu.  All the symptoms of the flu, but my temp stayed around 96.8.  My average temp seems to run somewhat lower than normal.  Have had bp on the lower side for years.  I haven't done tx yet.

Thanks for your responses. It does seem alot of us have this low body temp thing going on, even those like DoubleDose who is SVR. I definitely think its virus related cause the virus both active and occult I believe (IMO) does affect our body in many ways. The hormone imbalance alone that it causes would cause "thryoid type of a syndrome". I don't know what else to call it, being many of us our thyroid is normal, yet we have low body temp just like those who do have reall thryroid problems.

Dointime, thanks for your kind words and I hope you feel better soon.

Maybe we should look at the experience of patients who have had long term Lupus, Sjogren's, etc, to determine if abnormally low body temps are a part of their general clinical profile.  That might translate into our having an autoimmune-driven temperature problem.

Also, if we check out those with severe Pituitary deficiency, both child cases, and adult, maybe that would signal whether the Pituitary is chiefly responsible for governing the body temperature, even when the Thyroid tests normal.  There has to be some answer to this issue, and I do not think the researchers have really noticed this problem enough yet.  I have to wonder how many others with HCV, or who have treated, have noticed abnormally low body temperature over the years.

MO:Yes, everytime I get temp checked at dr...for many years now...it's been low. Also, blood pressure a bit low....which they all say is a good thing.

jd: I just watched this home remedy program (these 2 sisters..twins I think, have some incredible info). Anyway, they swear by this one.: Cut a lemon and rub on forehead. Then used slice lemons..place on forehead, scalp and wrap head in scarf....worth a try!

I can understand the thyroid and pituatary concerns,  but have you all thought about things like body weight?   My family is all small framed, our bodies do not have to work as hard to stay cool.

No Thyroid concerns ever from anyone, in my family.   That is not say they will show up while i am txing, but so far no.

There is no denying the concerns of txing and thyroids.   But actually like low blood pressure (not dangerously low)  lower body temps are a good thing.

DD awesome you are SVR
