Well that is the code for acute HCV, I'm not sure why they would send you to see a genetic counselor, they should be giving you a referral to a gastroenterologist or a hepatologist, hope you can get some answers
Do you mean your family doctor as in GP or PCP?
Don't be scared because you do not nearly have enough information.
First of all, do you mean you have not had ANY labs?
Did you not feel well and go to the doctor?
Maybe with complaints of jaundice, nausea, and dark urine?
It is important because:
070.51 is the ICD-9-CM code for Acute hepatitis C without mention of hepatic coma.
B17.10 – Acute hepatitis C without hepatic coma is the ICD-10 code.
In the overall scheme of things ultimately the only person who really cares about those codes is the one processing your health insurance claim. The code might have been on your receipt from the doctor's office or your EOB (Explanation of Benefits).
I was under the impression those codes are not used *¨*unless you have had a diagnostic work up. This is why I ask about symptoms or routine labs.
I agree 100% with hrsepwrguy: unless you have some other mysterious condition you have not mentioned or lots of other underlying conditions then imo it is a waste of time going to a Genetic Counselor. In fact I cannot help but wonder if there is a possible misunderstanding somewhere?
★☆★☆Many family doctors are uncertain how to proceed at this point. There has been more than one person on here convinced they have Chronic Hepatitis C when they only had presence of the Hepatitis C Antibody★☆★☆ In your case it is unclear there is even HCV Antibody.
Unless there is an underlying reason to not have done so I strongly encourage you to ask for a referral to a Gastroenterologist. If your insurance if the kind where you do not need a referral than maybe ask your doctor if (s)he knows of one.

What tests are you having done on the lab slips?
