neupogen i hate it!

I am on neupogen.  Have been since early in tx.  I will be doing my 39th tx tomorrow.  The neupogen makes me feel so bad.  for about 2.5 days.    Is there a chance you can wean off the neupogen early?  It does keep my wbc up.  but it I could even skip it for the last 2 wks, I would!  Any ideas out there?

My hepatologist is letting me try treatment again when telaprevir is approved. And my ANC went to zero. My thoughts on the 200 is only because he is at the end of treatment. And I did say "ask your doc". But you are absolutely right, 200 is a bit aggressive.

my anc is usually somewhere around 400-700 right before I take my injection.  I'm just gonna take my wait and see attitude, which this treatment is, and if my and does not go below 500 near the end of my treatment, I am going to suggest stopping it!!!  Of course, I will run it by my hematologist first.  I think he will be in agreement.  He knows what horrible side effects I have.  The fever, headach, body aches, TEETH AND EAR aches.....I could go on and on.  But, it has kept the wbc up...

Thanks guys.

Yah, I guess every hepa is different. I discussed this with my study nurse, and she said they don't intervene unless it gets to about 400, unless there are other complicating factors.

From everything I've heard about this junk, I sure hope I never have to take it.

Check with your doc. Perhaps a few weeks with a low count won't be an issue.

How low does your anc go without the neupogen? I forgot to ask.

The stuff is miserable in my opinion. I get a couple of really bad days from it also. When I take my weekly injection my anc sky rockets to 10,000-12,000 (wbc almost 14,000), a week later right before injection it is in the 250-300 range. I hate the stuff. Some people get no bad effect, but I'd take interferon over neupogen any day. Great news that you are almost there. Keep up the great work.

Susie- anc of 200 seems more aggressive then I think even the more progressive hepatologists will risk. My understanding is that although some hepatologists will let you go to 300 without using neupogen this is pretty unusual and very very aggressive, . Perhaps you are correct that it would be okay, but I would be fearful of it going even lower.

Neupogen is tough. Ask your treating doc if you can stop. I would imagine if your ANC is not terribly low (below 200) you could stop.

Amen sister, it's nasty stuff.  I stopped two weeks prior to ending tx because it would have meant ordering another box of 4 which I didn't need.  Whites stayed at an acceptable level.  I don't know whether it was the intereron, the neutropenia or the neupogen but I kept a fever throughout my entire treatment.  That s-u-c-k-e-d.
