Blood in Face. Risk?

Please help me. I was downtown Denver today and a homeless wormen, with only like 3 teeth, and obviously high on something, grabbed my arm and started telling me how she had AIDS and was on the streets and needed money for her baby and so on. I stopped because I didn't want to brush her off as if she didn't matter. But all of a sudden she started coughing up a bunch of stuff and a few blobs of cough/saliva and whatever else was in her mouth and throat hit me in the face and two or three small drops hit me in the eye. I'm sure you see where I'm going with this. I am afraid there may have been blood in her mouth or throat which hit me in the eye. I'm pregnant myself. What should I do?  Am I at risk? THANK YOU!!!

As Marcia said, your chances of contracting HCV from this event are close to nil, her blood would have had to have entered your blood.

HIV would also be much the same.  I believe that it isn't absolutely impossible but it is a very rare occurrence in health care providers that transmission occurs either via blood (more likely) or sputum (far less likely).  These events occur in hospitals with some frequency but transmission is not common.

If she had flu you might contract it, but HIV or HCV are not easily spread in this manner, not impossible in highly highly unlikely.

You can also call a "call a nurse" line, available at many hospitals or call and ask to talk to your doctor.  If you can't get past the idea that you've been exposed to risk you can also ask either information source about getting tested.  My sense is that your exposure would be as likely to transmit as your odds of getting hit by lightning, but I certainly understand your fear.  It the facts about transmission just don't support giving it too much consideration as a means of getting infected.

Best of luck with your pregnancy and I hope the reply calms you down some.

best,
willy

Hi, I understand that you are scared. You could not have contracted Hepatitis C this way. This is not an HIV forum and I wouldn't be able to tell you. Personally I would go to a doctor or clinic immediately and ask them what to do. They should know.

Good luck with your pregnancy and I wish you all the best.
