Lewis Carol was a genius. I loved this poem from the first time I read Alice in Wonderland as a kid. I re-read it a few years ago and I still loved it.
"The frumious Bandersnatch!"
I am not sure what that means and I am not going to look it up. I am going to just use my imagination. “Bandersnatch,” it makes me smile just to say it.
I happen to like a good discussion also. It degenerates when assumptions are made about what kind of person one is based on the viewpoints one holds or when one is accused of being the same kind of person that the worst known person is who also holds the same point of view or anything resembling that point of view.
I happen to like cap and trade as a general approach. As with anything, I think it has to be intelligently applied, however.
R Glass - interesting opinion. I'm going to die anyway but that doesn't mean I shouldn't take care of my body properly to prevent myself from dying sooner or dying in a state of decrepitness that I could avoid or that would prevent my children from suffering more than they need to because of my carelessness. They WILL take care of me and it would be irresponsible for me to put them in a position of financial and emotional suffering that could have otherwise been avoided if I'd taken better precautions.
Now apply that to the environment. Once we're aware there's an issue...and we are...then we should take the appropriate precautions because it's our children and their children and so on that will inherit whatever we leave for them.
I don't buy the Al Gore **** and I think he's done a good job of making alot of money off of the kind of people who mindlessly buy the Michael Moore **** at face value also without dissecting it for truth or fictionI thought Bali was an utter failure because of the failure to have India or China commit to anything concrete to prevent them from undoing the work that everyone else is at least talking about attempting to do.
However. I think it's naive to say we have NO problem. It's not quite the extremes that some would have us think and it's not quite the non-issue that others would. The oil industry in Canada is an environmental nightmare but...the world and the U.S. and Canada depends far too much on oil. So only so much is being done so fast there so as not to kneecap everyone. Is that a correct approach? I don't know. But to go to the lengths some people want it taken would be an economic nightmare.
In the last federal election, a girlfriend of mine thought the most important issue was the environment. Me, I thought it was the economy. And there's the rub. Both are important and there's a difficult balance to strike between the two, in my personal opinion.
“It is not so very important for a person to learn facts. For that he does not really need a college. He can learn them from books. The value of an education is a liberal arts college is not learning of many facts but the training of the mind to think something that cannot be learned from textbooks.”
-Albert Einstein
Guess that sums it all up.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
Al Gore with make megamillions if this bill passes. And, the science is far from settled on global warming. History shows these cycles in temp. are the norm. In fact, we are now in a period of global cooling. I believe it a hoax from the beginning.
It does us good and may even be healthy to discuss things outside HCV.
I like it when we do not all agree, it helps to see things through other peoples perspectives. This is a HCV Forum but it also the Social side where we tend to be more lax.
Well, I can tell you what Al Gore will be doing, along with his friend Nancy Pelosi. Both of them will be flying around the world in their lear jets making huge carbon footprints, while their telling us not too.
To All:
I regret making this post as its not really appropriate in a Hep C forum. Lost my head for a moment. We could debate the issue for days and some of us will never agree.
Lets put this post to rest.
Thanks
Granted, we are not helping the planet but, (my opinion) Earth was here long before us and will be here long after we are gone. What is going to happen is going to happen.
We may slow the inevitable down but we will not be able to stop it. I believe we will be dead and gone by then but, I would rather see nature destroy us than we destroying ourselves
We are in the heat of the summer here in South Louisiana and in a drought.
I am sure Gore will soon be padding his pockets on Global warming. Maybe another book, who knows.
He seems to Hibernate in the winter when the Northerners are freezing to death and troll in the summer.
You are my hero!
I was determined not to comment on any political statement, but this is beyond politics. Anyone that thinks global warming is a myth should take a vacation in Alaska; the permafrost is melting! The glaciers are shrinking at an alarming rate, the coral in the Caribbean is dying.
All this signals that New York will have the climate of Atlanta by the end of this century and there will be serious weather disturbances that impact the food supply. Not to mention that the entire state of Florida will be under water.
Unfortunately, this bill is the usual political nonsense produced by the democrats and the republicans and will probably not do anything at all. It is said that the boomers are the generation on "me first" and that certainly seems to be the hallmark; who cares about our children when we can buy that extra toy.
amazed this thread hasn't gotten zapped yet - but hey, as far as I'm concerned, passage of cap & trade is without a doubt the best bit of news to come out of D.C. in a long, long time. I figure I'm going to die fairly soon no matter what, but in the remaining years anything I can do to help reverse the cumulative damage of human presence on this planet has got to be reason to smile (my regrets if this cuts into anyone's shopping, but check out the wikipedia pages on kyoto signatories vs co2 emissions by country if you're still wondering).
Per the St. Augustine quote above, sorry to break it to you Aug, but the time is *now*...
What is this bill, is it..to stop the importation of foreign oil??
EPA says it will reduce the importation of oil by a very little bit.
Is it to create "green" jobs??... ask Spain and the others for every green job they have created they have lost 2.25 other jobs a net deficit in jobs....so what are the advantages here ...?
Actually we don't have to worry as it stands today no way is it getting out of the senate ...so it is a mute point
Just because the Liberal Media won't report it doesn't mean it's not so. Afganistan is a war. North Korea and Iran? Just a matter of time. And the administration just told all our foreign embassies to stock up on the local currency, but hey, the dollar is fine so spend away! But go ahead a watch msnbc comrade, we are all red now! Coooollll....
p.s. Glenn Beck kicks Keith Obermans as*!
p.s.s. In true Marxist fashion, ban me from the site now.
Oh sighhhhhh sighhhhhhhh. It's sooooo sad. Glenn Beck could have done a great job.... between breakdowns - or McCain the war hero if he didn't have on of his temper tantrums. Houston to "do you got a clue"?
Look on the bright side - we haven't been attacked yet and we didn't start a war either and that's progress to me.......sighhhhhhhh.....
sigh..... warned everybody. this administration will collapse the dollar sooner or later, wait and see.
think Cap & Trade is bad, i live in California with Gov. Steroid - just will add to it.
Settle down, it only passed the house, the Senate hasn't voted yet, and it's not expected to pass.
Hahah! Oh thats too funny!! Im almost in tears!
cap & trade = what a dentist does with a prostitute?
hiya Tippy, I didn't know what cap & trade was until I looked it up. I did not like one bit of what I was reading.............Thanks for the enlightenment as I saw nothing about it on the news.

Your'e almost there Trish. Now all you have to do is connect the Dots.
