Emailing 60 minutes?

Do any of you think that it would be a good idea to email the news magazine show, 60 minutes and ask them if they'd do a segment on Hep C?   I'm just wondering that if a bunch of us sent emails to them and told them that we wanted them to do a segment on it if they would take notice and do one.  We could use the argument that there's this story in the news lately about the accidentally infecting of the people in Las Vegas.  We could remind them about the fact that there are so many people infected with Hep C in the U.S. and that there doesn't seem to be alot of research $$$ spent on it.  We could point out that there have been certain stars in the media who have made public their Hep C infection (by doing this, we're not violating any confidentially of those stars since they have come out into the open and stated that they had this virus).   Are any of you interested in emailing 60 minutes?  You wouldn't have to really be telling them that you wanted to BE on their show or anything, just that you'd like to see a segment done about it.  We need more CORRECT information to be out there to the public.

This is the address that I found out about for emailing them:  ***@****    or if this gets wiped out by medhelp, just type 60m@       then, next to it, put the cbsnews  and then, next to that put the .   and then, the com.   If you know what I mean.  :)

I'm going to try and write to them.  I hope somebody else decides to write them, too.

If you want, you can PM me and I'll show you what I have for the email address.  I got it off of their website.  Also, the email address was in a letter to the editor in my newspaper.  I emailed them to that address and it went through and I didn't get back any error messages, so I'm guessing that it's good.   Just PM me and I'll see if I can get you going!!    I did mention about the lack of funding for the HepC research.  I sent them a list of the celebrities who have come out with their Hep C diagnosis and I sent them a link to the article about the Vegas outbreak....  all to make a point that they need to do a segment on this disease!  I figure if we can get alot of us sending in emails that they may notice it more than just my email.

I just sent 60 Minutes an email asking them to do a story as I think it's a great idea.  I'm not as fortunate as some of you b/c I have to keep my HepC status a secret as I work for a civil service department and I can't afford to have my identity exposed.  The reason of course is due to my drug history.  I hope someone sends them a letter and even offers to be interviewed.  That doesn't mean that they would take anyone up on their offer to be interviewed, however I think it would be better received than just an anonymous person like me asking for them to do a short story or news segment.  It's not really anonymous as my name is my email address so they could easily verify that I exist as whatever.  LOL  I will share my letter and answer if I get a response.  God Bless

Good idea Susan .. you GO, girl!  :)  A Canuck sending in an email isn't going to do a bit of good so good luck to all of you with catching their attention.

I concur with Elaine that you might want to mention some stats such as Hep C being 4X more prevalent than AIDS and the leading cause of liver transplants in the US and Canada too for that matter.  That it's a blood-borne disease and known as the "silent killer" because people don't often display symptoms until the liver damage has progressed quite far along.

Trish, I have already sent my letter, yesterday, but, yes, I did include that fact in my letter.  I mentioned all of the celebrities that are listed on Wikipedia, who have 'come-out' with their Hep-C diagnosis.  (I don't know if 'come-out' is proper terminology for this, but I really don't know how else to phrase it.)    I mentioned that it is the leading cause of liver transplants and that it is more prevalent than AIDS and needs to be funded better.  I also put a link on there to the AP about the Vegas clinic thing.  They're an investigative news team, so I think if many of us send letters, that 60 min. will at least - take notice and do their own research to back up our facts.  But, my point is, LET'S make them aware that it needs to be done!  I also pointed out that this is NOT just a disease of drug-addicts.

I've heard back from a few people who have sent out their letters, so I'm hopeful that more of you will send them as well.

I think it is an excellent idea.  I watch 60 minutes, dateline, 20/20 all of the time and don't think I have ever seen anything about the Hep C virus.  I hope and pray that the emails get through and it works.

I'm going to be really honest with you guys...

The one lesson I have learned recently --- is that there is more money in the treating of ANY disease - compared to a cure.

Maybe if you put it that way ---- THE NEWS companies might be more interested in handling it.

Much luck to you all.

If any of you have a problem with sending the email out, there's a couple of others on here who have been able to send the letter out and haven't had a problem.  You have to type the address in your normal email address, not the web address link.  Anyhow, I have to be away from my computer for a few days, from Tomorrow through Thurs. and I'll need for you to try to get the send info from the others if you have a problem.  Don't give up on this idea though, as I'm going to be back and want to see that some of you have sent out some more letters!!  It doesn't really matter, what you say as long as you get the point across that we need a segment done on HEP C to raise awareness.   So, just type in the 60m   @   cbsnews    then, the dot.     then the com    (without the spaces of course)  into your address line on your normal email.

I had a problem with the first one I sent out, then I followed your instructions and it looks like it went through.  Whether it will do any good, who knows.  I figure it's best to give it a try than to sit and and let others die.  Oh I almost exposed myself as a wanna be rapper.  LOL  FWIW it may do no good at all, I don't see it as a waste of time as you just never know.  It's certainly not a waste of my time as for the 3 or 4 minutes it took me to write, what else was I doing that was more important?   I guess it's totally how you view things.  God Bless

I totally agree!  At the most, the very outter side of MOST, it took me 1/2 hr., but honestly, I don't think that I even took that long.  I just feel like, what in the world do we have to lose?  And we have everything to gain, by getting more out there for the general public to be made aware.  One of the points I made was that this is NOT just a drug addicts disease!  Also, ALOT of people watch 60 min on Sun. nights because it's not a work night and a lot of people have it on because it comes on just after the evening news (at least on the EST).  I'm certainly not implying that it's a show that will be viewed by EVERYONE.   They also, may not take note of our posts, but we haven't lost anything by trying.    :)     That's all I can do, is try, my MaMa always told me.

Right on, to the Right on!  As they used to say back in the day.  The more who write the better, I'm certain we're not throwing water in the wind, but if we are that's ok to as it's been getting really hot lately anyways.  later

I once contacted 60minutes about this story I found in a book about how Elvis's brother was still alive. They got back to me and said that it wasn't big enough or something.

What I did was find out who the producers were in some book at the library and mailed it "Attention: soand so".

It's not what you send, it's who you send it to.

Meki, good point!

Susan, just saw this. As you know ....been busy and falling out when I get home! Not online, etc. I like this and will send a letter. Also, you can put the link on your profile, as I did for my MDA ride. With many of us maybe it will get happen and it is so needed. I'll get my sister and brother in law to write. He's the one the VA won't even see him, bx him or refer him for Hep C because he tested for pot and is VERY ill, (perhaps should leave that out), but he has no risk factors, etc. Talk more Thursday :)

Yes I looked at your profile and that's where I emailed to, I still think it's a great idea and we have nothing to lose and everything/something to gain.  How does anyone think they get their stories?  Sure they think up alot of stuff and they've most likely thought of HepC before, but they may have canned the idea.  With the Nevada clinic re-using needles that qualifies as a current event, that's what they write about, current events.  I'm sure they thought of that, maybe writing them will validate their previous thoughts, who knows?  take care

This is a great idea,  I am emailing them today, and asking some friends and family members to also!  Wow Susan  awesome.

They may have canned it before but the louder our voices get,  The sooner they will realize they have a story!

Awesome and totally positive idea!

Yes if we have 100 or more emails hitting a web address I think it may go to the top, even if it's just mentioned in passing between employees of 60 minutes it still may go to the top and be accepted as newsworthy and get a short or long segment.  Also, it's very important that our letters are written individually as it's more personal that way and will go further.  Common sense tells me that there's a few rookies who read and respond to these emails, but you never know who they forward them to, and you never know what supervisor they may ask for advise on.  Besides, some big wig may occasionally take a look at the email flow and decide it's a newsworthy item.  It certainly qualifies as newsworthy to me and you have nothing to lose but a few minutes or half hour tops.  Just the incident in Nevada makes it newsworthy as innocent people were affected.  The news agencies seemed to have backed off of that one quickly most likely due to legalities.  If a news agency has any bawls that would be 60 minutes, oh yeah and we can move onward to other ones like Dateline or mention them as well.  My point is 60 minutes has always been a front runner and has taken stories on, that other news agencies wouldn't or couldn't.  IMO I feel that this is just as important, if not even more so than writing to some Congressman or other elected official, besides I think it will go further than writing to a member of Congress or something like that.  Incidently I've never written to a public official so this is a big deal to me.

Doesn't there have to be some sort of controversy to get on 60 minutes, as opposed to a regular health show, or segment in news? Maybe, like hospitals infecting patients, or similar?
