For Medhelp, Best response???

Whenever I post something, in time, a little  message comes into my email from Medhelp asking for me to choose a best response. Often, there is no such 'best' answer.

Personally, I prefer not to compete, life is not a competition,( in my view) there is always someone better, someone worse. Why waste our precious time making ourselves or others feel bad??
Being healthy is not about getting the gold star.
I think this isn't a good system for a health forum.
So, here's my question, what do the rest of you think about the idea of 'best answer'?

To me the the star and best response thing are a real turn off.
It`s got game show character in a real life and often serious setting.

I think Willy's answer was elegantly stated.
I remember beng kind of deflated when the star thing began.  I felt like I'd been here about a hundred years and yet I didn't have any stars to prove it.  :>)   I got over it quick,  reminded myself of my purpose, and reviewed the fact  junior high is forever behind me.  :>)

Increase traffic. hence more reading the inane ads..more businesses contract ads...more money to MH  .... we are the unpaid employees.....but we can use their space to help and support each other......despite their profit motivation

I think it's designed to increase traffic. It certainly doesn't increase the level of dialogue

I have never liked the "best" answer.

First of all, it seems like a "payment".
See?  You write a good answer and you get a GOLD star.  How first grade....
I think it demeans the process; doing something, giving of your time, sharing what you  know or *think* you know.  : )
Now it is no longer a gift, an act of giving.  You are being "paid" with the possibility of getting a star....... and if the Gods are kind...... you can become a TOP ANSWERER.

Rather than encouraging me to post it may have the opposite effect.

Then there is the notion of "BEST"......

How is it that some newbie that shows up knowing nothing, but wants to know if they can acquire HCV from having phone sex is put into the position of granting that most hallowed of honors; the gold star for "best answer".

The linking to Facebook and twitter is just more frosting on the cake (or more lipstick on the pig.)

Thanks!!!  That was cathartic.  : )

I would rather "thank" someone for a well worded intelligent reply than rely on (often) unschooled people to confer the title of "best".
Is that even appropriate in a medical forum?

best,  (oops, I mean with love.....)

It would be nice, but it won't happen.  It can't.  It's bigger than all of us now.

It would be very nice if medhelp looked at this post and paid attention.
And yes, ignoring is what I generally do.

Elaine: I'm doing okay, waiting on a biopsy result but generally speaking, I'm down to a minimum of immune suppression meds, walking a lot, eating well, painting some, and looking for a new home to plant a garden.
Life is good. Thanks for asking.

What I found is when I am reading typing and strolling my mouse will hit something and I see a check mark appear and it says best answer, but I don't mean to hit that. Don't know if it's registering or not, but I also think that is a stupid feature and wish they would remove it. Everyone's input is the best answer as far as I am concerned. I want to hear it all. It helps so much

I have to preface this by saying that it turned into a bit of a rant and it's not directed at you oh, it's just kind of timely that you asked about this topic.

I will try never to say anything nice nor anything intelligent to anyone if you promise never to pick me.  I just changed my avatar/pic/whatever thingie because I also just now noticed that we now have a little facebook thing for people to "like."  Grand.  I really want people to "like" my hcv post with my pic on it on facebook and "share" it with their "friends".

I really want people to google my best answer on hcv with my photo on it.  Or at all.  Just lovely.  I now have to go back over however many pages of journal posts I have (and God knows I have hypergraphia) and pick out anything that might tend to identify me.  It was nice when this was just a group of people with hcv helping each other.  Now I guess it's God and everyone.  Freakin' technology.

You can simply continue to ignore it.  Sometimes I choose a best answer, other times I simply don't have the time for it.  I don't see much value in this either, except maybe to someone very new that doesn't know the members and know who is who.  It does take a while to sort that out.  I don't see much of a point to "The Top Hepatitis Answerers" section if the stars are already next to a name.  This takes up valuable space on the front page that could be used for something more useful..

And I don't care at all if you select this for best answer. haha.
