Sciatica is nerve pain. Lyrica helps nerve pain,
but that's up to your Dr. to decide what your safest pain
med would be (That would give you some relief)
The Mayo clinic has a good article on it...
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sciatica/DS00516
"Sciatica isn't a disorder in and of itself. Instead, sciatica is a symptom of another problem involving the nerve, such as a herniated disk. Depending on the cause, the pain of acute sciatica — which you may find considerably uncomfortable — usually goes away on its own in four to eight weeks or so."
I know 4-8 weeks seems like forever when you are in pain
Hope you feel better soon...
enigma
I had sciatica for sometime and found it crippling. During the course of a check-up my GP did a check for Vitamin B12 levels and I was very low.
B12 is the only vitamin that cannot be directly absorbed by the body and requires a gland in your stomach to emit an enzyme to allow it to absorb. As you get older this gland can stop working. They will do a blood test looking for an "intrinsic factor" to see if your stomach is capable of absorbing B12.
The nurse got my results muddled and said I didn't have instrinsic factor so the doc said I'd have to have B12 injections for the rest of my life (lack of B12 can be very serious). He gave me the first one and, literally, within hours, I had relief from my sciatica. I came up in pimples after the next injection which meant I had an allergy to the injection - the alternative B12 injection wasn't available in this country. THEN he checked my bloodwork and realised the nurse had read it back to front and I was able to absorb B12 orally.
Whenever I start feeling achey I take a B-complex with a high B12 mcg.
I googled B12 and sciatica and found a women who had also has this result with B12.
I'm not diagnosing; just sharing my experience and would suggest you get a B12 check with your PCP just in case it's something that can be of assistance to you also. Best of luck - I empathise with the pain.
have you tried that little machine that sends waves, last time i had sciatica, they gave me that to bring home. it worked great,
on the hydrocodone. That's what they gave me.
I'm allowed to take hydrocodone that has 325 mg tylenol up to 3 times a day, and the same for flexeril 10mg, for back pain/sciatica.
Ibuprofen is alright as well, sometimes that is all I take. Moderation is the key here, and absolutely no alcohol.
Hope this helps,
