Upper Endoscopy

I did a scan on the MRI of my liver and upper body. The test results came back lightly nodular, mild periportaledema, spleen borderline,no upper abdominal ascites or free intraperitoneal air,but lung bases demonstrate a 3mm micronodule within the left lower lobe????????? It is the "C" word???

I ask the nurse is this why I am being ask to do an upper endoscopy.  She said no, it is becasue the medicine can cause the blood vessels in my neck or body to expand and might start bleeding??? Does this make any sense to anyone out there????

I'm about to schedule endoscope.  Doc wants to check out, as Jim mentions, any evidence of varices plus check up on already diagnosed gerd and Barretts.  I am recently post tx and doc wants to see if any change from a year ago which was just before tx started. A pretty wise test to have.

Upper Endoscophy's are sometimes part of a normal screening/pre-treatment process with Hepatitis C. They are probably looking for Varices (distended veins prone to bleeding) that are sometimes assocated with advanced liver disease.

Assuming you're not stage 4 and have no other symptons of advanced liver disease such as Ascites, low plateletes, etc -- then I wouldn't be overly concerned and just assume your doctor is doing this as part of a normal screening.

Of course, always best to ask the doctor directly why they feel a procedure is necessary and in this case why they think you in particular might have a bleeding problem during treatment. It may turn out they doing an endoscophy on all their Hep C patients or your doctor may have another answer. Easy enough to find out.

As to the MRI finding and the "C" word.

What appears to be a similar question was asked to a registered nurse on one of MH's professionally monitored forums.

The nurse didn't think it woud be cause for concern (this fellow was a non-smoker) and did not recommend a biopsy although was not opposed to it.

Again, it's easy to panic when reading these scan reports as every finding can sometimes seem terrifying, especially to a layman. I know they often seemed that way to me until my doctor explained what "this and that" really meant.

So again, best to sit down with your doctor and ask about the micronodule and its implications. Sounds like it will turn out to be nothing to be concerned about, and I assume if it was, you would have been told. In any event, if your doctor's explanattions don't satisfy you, then you always have the option of taking the scan to a specialist in lung issues.

Anyway, here's a link to  the Q&A I mentioned earlier:

All the best with treatment,

you could have a bas spoy gtom a cyst, or btokrn forn aveoli, or a tumor, thry;kk problr watch it got gtowyj, ir if margins are unever, do a biopsy. ZPdd golks end ip with benigh nodiles everywhere, lings, necks, behind ears, on the kidneys. they seldom present pronlrms and frow wuite slowly.
nuy upi should adk bot a biopsy un dase ut us the ither, they can save lungs almost completely if caught in time.

yes the nurse is right, sometimes the disease does it in latter stages, Sometimes just the tx can cause it, because ots pressing the organs to fight a lot all day and every nught. this thed to cause swelling in certain areasm the abdomen and esophagus chief among them. there are drugs then give for this sort of discomfort, So if lying alone and relaxing got 26 minutes doesn;t eleviate, and you;ve trued to expellall air,and are sti;l having probs, get to the doc to see ehat thet want you on, It could be panic, and they have drugs. for this, OI|H It coild be fluif proddure, this they can drain any.
call you doc or NP to get some releif for this.if left untreated you can lose blood from veins in the throat canal, or surronging liver. each is danheroud but preventable so you netake it sertoiusly.ed to tell them EXACTLY what sympoms you are having and make sur ethey hear yoi load and clear.
