My tastebuds died when I was on treatment and YES I did get a horrible metalic taste in my mouth regularly.
I'm a big advocate of yogurt and or acidophilus. But I got sores on my tongue too. My opinion is the medication does some kind of weird thing with our senses or the neurotransmitters in our brain. So foods taste odd, things smell off. etc. This includes feeling nauseous when I was really hungry. And yes, the effects are cumulative.
I did 32 weeks w/o ADs but it was tough at times. They are life savers for some. Good luck.
You might want to start thinking about AD's. I tried to tough it out but I really thought I was losing my mind around week 20. Sounds, especially, would send me off the deep end.
I'm on prozac and it has really helped me tolerate SX.
the mouth stuff is a pain - I'm now getting those tongue sores along with the cracked lip corners. Stock up on chap stick, lip balm, water, soft foods, and ice cream!!!!! that really helps! *LOL*,

Week 3 of how long?
I'm at 34 of 72 and the mouth sores are driving me nuts. i get them at the corners of the lips and they're so irritating i have a hard time brushing my teeth . .. .
the smell and taste thing are bad, too. Everything tastes like rusty knives. And certain scents make me feel nauseaous although i don't puke, yet.
If the smell thing continues you might want to check to see if you have a sinus or ear infection . . .

Unfortunately the wierd sore in your mouth is from the interferon. I had them for almost all 72 weeks and nothing I did or tried got rid of them. They were painful and almost drove me CRAZY!
I rremember in the beginning that everything (including ME) did smell like the meds. It made me so nauseaus I couldn't stand to be with myself. Heck I am sure even my pee smelled like it (at first I thought I was crazy!) - other people have posted about it many times before so it's not your imagination at all.
That does go away though....either that or we just get so used to it we can't tell we stink anymore! Oh the good life for us heppers it is! :)
The only thing I found never tasted any different during treatment was ice cream. Ah it was always good and there were so many kinds! It really felt great on the mouth sores too!
Good luck!!!!!!!!!
Hi Kit - I am Beth (people also call me dip lol)
I do shot number 29 tonight - my tastes are in the oposite direction - things I never ate before I crave now - I was a vegetarian for years and since I started tx I crave meat - and not the good proteins either - things like bacon and ham and sausage LOL It's very strange...The only smell differences I have noticed is flowers seem pungent to me now - I love flowers and always had a vase of fresh flowers in my house, but not anymore...It is almost a very strong perfumy smell to me now..
I hope you have an easy go of it - not everyone has bad side effects
Best of luck to you
Beth
Taste perversion is a common complaint with people on treatment. Sometimes patients report a metallic taste; others can’t handle spicy foods, toothpaste, etc. For some of us, it can get bad enough that it’s difficult to eat, resulting in weight loss. I’m unaware of any Rx for this- try to find a food/flavor you can go with.
Another one on the list is mouth sores/ ulcers. There can be many causes; ask your doctor for advice. Some of us, myself included have taken Nystatin (sp). A mild swish and swallow anti-fungal can help with white plaque deposits on the tongue that resemble thrush. Another remedy is Magic Mouthwash; it needs to be Rx’d by your doctor and compounded by the pharmacist. It contains a topical anesthetic like lidocaine along with other magic ingredients ;o). Some way it really helps.
For nausea, try OTC products or maybe ginger root (ginger ale, pickled sushi ginger, candied ginger, etc). If the road gets rough, ask your doctor for an anti-emetic like Phenergren (sp).
I’m currently in week 47 of scheduled 72, and my second go around with this stuff, so you’ve found sympathy here.
Good luck and take care,
Bill
