Amen to what TeeVee says "hep is a slow death to the liver......alchohol can only make it worse"
Since you have the virus problem, you don't need any additional injury to your liver. My doc doesn't want me even using Nyquil! First things he told me were "get vaccinated for HepA and HepB, and no alchohol (AT ALL)".
I don't know about TX, but a person with a drinking problem will not get accepted on the Liver Transplant List.
Try green tea. I've grown to like it and it has lots of antioxidants which may be good. Take care of your liver; it's worth more than the beer buzzes ;) Best luck!
Did you ever have a biopsy?
I have heard that alcohol makes the hep virus multiply quicker therefore speeding up the liver damage process.. Someone who doesnt drink but has Hep will live longer than someone who does drink with HepC.
When you were treating in 2000, did your viral load decrease, or any of your other numbers(ALT/AST)?
I think if youre not that big of a drinker, they let you start treatment after a little while...if a person IS a big drinker, they need you to stay sober for 6 months prior...correct me if I'm wrong...
course, you can do whatever you feel is best, it's your body after all...but if you're that worried about your alt levels, why not try knocking out your drinking of alcohol altogether? Plenty of other things to drink at parties, I personally like fizzy water with a sprig of lime....
Test a few months into not drinking at all...if they go down (and I'd wager they would, but I sure don't know for sure) then you have answered your own question, and it'll be up to you as to how to proceed...drinking *can* bump up alt levels...your liver is already being attacked by a virus, and it's prob not in the best shape to be putting up with too many *other* aggravations...you need to do all you can to baby it, not stress it further....till you decide to do treatment again, or whatever....just my take...
TX is treatment. My liver issue (Hep C ~ Genotype 1) was not caused by drinking either. I shared needles in late teens early twenties. Anyway, please don't take this the wrong way...if you have Hepatitis you should not be dringking at all. Hep is a slow death to the liver and Alcohol can only worsen and speed up your condition. I don't know if they even allow you to be treated if you are drinking. Does anyone know the answer to that?
Thank you sooo much for your response. I am breathing now. :-) What is TX? Never heard of it. The Rebo and Interfereon sucked also. Man was that a bad year (2000). I have slowed down my drinking alot. I'll have 2 glasses of wine in the evening. I know I should cut it out altogether, but I enjoy those dinner drinks and with friends etc. My liver issue is not caused by drinking it is viral. Well anyway TeeVee, I will be chatting with you again soon. I am glad I found this forum. I tailspinned this afternoon when the doctor's office called. PANIC ATTACK. I am at work and I haven't done squat because I was so unable to focus. Thanks so much again. Peace and Love.
I quit drinking approximately 15 yrs ago. I drank half a glass of a strawberry daquiri @ a xmas party around 6 yrs ago. After that drink I was sick (in agony) @ night in pain. They thought I was passing a gallstone or something. I went to two different emergency rooms over the course of two weeks and was diagnosed with Hep C and I had a much higher AST/ALT level than what you have. It was a long time ago so I can't quote the exact numbers but it had skyrocketed for some reason. I guess my system couldn't handle the alcohol...don't really know. All I know is my levels have been up and down and outrageously high and right now they are normal bc of TX! TX sucks but it is a cure and you have no choice but to try it.
