Just remember we have all been where you are... I found out in April of this year.. it was not easy adjusting to knowing... I think 5 months is crazy..This ordeal is hard enough, plenty of waiting goes on and to add 5 months before you can even consider treating I would think can't be good. I would do as has been suggested and look for a specialist. The first Doctor I went to was a liver specialist but not a hep c dr. and his bedside manner was not great. I changed right away and am really happy that I did. I don't see where you live? Ask on this forum if anyone can suggest someone in your area.
Just hang in there and know that you are going to be ok. You will go thru many emotions and it won't always be easy but as was told to me many times TX is doable and you know what i have been tx for 2 months and am doing ok.
wishing you peace of mind... you found a great site.. lots of loving and knowledgeable people here.. I don't know if I could make it without it.
I don't know what to tell you about the 5 month wait to get in. Were you referred by your GP? Maybe he/she can help you get in sooner.
Welcome! Once you are diagnosed, as you have been, I would recommend seeing a GI or hepatologist, preferably one who specializes in HCV, for further tests and treatments. These tests and treatments are generally out of the league for most GPs.
You already have a viral load test (quite high), but you do not say the genotype. This is probably the most important factor that will affect your treatment and outcome. Next is the condition of your liver which is determined by biopsy. Don't rely only on viral load, liver enzymes, ultrasound or CT scan, as none of these really can determine disease level or staging.
Armed with this information, your medical history and individual circumstances, your hepatologist will be able to help you decide the best course of action. There is no "one treatment fits all". Some times it is best to get treatment underway and sometimes it is better to wait. This is the part that is often not really clear.
Best luck to you. Hope to see you around.

Seeking a hepatologist is key to good hep c management...While you are waiting to see one, your GP can "pave the road" for your specialist...Determine your genotype, and have him/her arrange a liver biopsy if they will. Sometimes it takes forever to get scheduled for a biopsy, so getting it out of the way will be helpful to your specialist and speed things up for you...5 months seems a bit extreme for a wait, but some areas have few resources..Do you have a teaching hospital in your state or a university? You may find more resources there...Good luck on your quest! ~Melinda
You found the right forum. These people are ace at getting you on the right path. If they don't answer right away, don't worry. Just keep reading and searching this forum. It's all here.
I'm no doctor, but pretty sure the specialist is going to ask for a liver biopsy. Depending on finances, you might want to start right away with that. It's the definitive measure of how the virus has affected your liver. Please don't use my advice without second and third opinions.
