What to do if you cut yourself

This evening I was working in my garden and then jumped in the pool.  While floating on a raft, I noticed I had several cuts on my legs that were not actively bleeding, but fresh none the less.  I think I know that bleach kills the virus and is considered a universal precaution, but can the same be said for chlorine.  Isn't chlorine bleach?

Probably a stupid question, but I don't often bleed from cuts so this kinda got me to (over)thinking.  Once the cuts and scrapes are healing (scabbing over-gross) do I need to be worried about them?

Thanks for any info-Izzy

My house Shepherd is used to dealing with my dwarf shepherd who weighs 8 lbs but my 3 kennel dogs would take that bite....LOL   I always tell my mom that she wouldn't like it if my dogs barked at her shihtzu like the shihtzu barks at big dogs.

to all, the use of vit K is interesting.  The only thing I ever heard of it being used for was in the case of a dog getting into rat poison, so it makes sense to use it in humans to help with the clotting time.

When i was diagnosed in "96 I had vitamin K for a period since my pro-time was so long....they said it was cause of the HCV......I was in the clinical trial for interferon / with ribavarin capsules three times daily. Mayo Clinic in '96....5 million units alpha interferon every other day sub cute....that trial ultimately produced the pegatron system that wraps the interferon in a glycol coat that makes it time release and allows a lower dose injected once a week to work just as well as what I did.....you folks are actually really lucky!!! Good luck to all of you..........

I dont remember my doctor saying anything about thin blood, he just said the liver is very bloody and they keep you because you could bleed.

I double checked too.  If this is incorrect info, I apologize, but I believe they give post transplant patients vitamin K because it does help to thicken the blood. And would explain why my sis advises me to get an id bracelet-not only for precaution of infection, but because we are considered bleeders-ie:thin blood.

I do take vitamin K because I read a of small study where it did benefit women with cirrohsis. (sp)

Once again-my personal information-not medical advice.  But it looks like you are correct.  Still thinking someone will post who has better information....

No, he specifically said that HCV makes the blood thinner. Takes longer for scabs to form, I'm thinking.

But the biopsy comes with a lot of other caveats like you mention too.

My Izzy's name is Bailey - he's a bichon and weighs about 15 pounds (so he really is like a giant to Izzy I guess!) but boy he thinks he is just HUGE - always barking down great big pitbulls and other huge dogs that would eat him in one bite!  We always say he really has a Napolean Complex..........but I think he really doesn't have the slightest clue that he's a little tiny house dog!

I could see the two of them together terrorizing some big German Shepard dog who would be like huh? what is wrong with this picture!

I'm glad you have a little princess...........they are SO wonderful to have during treatment when you need a hug. Mine sure helped me get through I'll tell you that!  :)

My Izzy has the personality of a Great Dane, but-she weighs 2 lbs.  She thinks she is bigger and she knows she is a princess, but she is actually a chihuahua!  Drives me crazy-people always say-That's not a dog.  What exactly they think she is I don't know.

Gotto go bring her breakfast in (my) bed.....hehe!

I thought it was because the liver could bleed after the biospy not necessarily that HCV acted like a blood thinner.  Hopefully someone will know and chime in....

When I went for my biopsy the doctor said one of the reasons they take so many precautions at the biopsy and make you stay for a while is that HCV makes your blood thinner. Never heard this anywhere else.

Whenever I cut myself I kind of freak out over my own blood too. It is weird to think of your own blood as a hazard but it is. I always find my kids and husband getting  into my nail clippers so I bought  a special set and hid it. They know not to use my razors and tooth brush. There was a post on here once that said if a cat scratches you and draws blood then scratches someone else it could possibly transmit it that way. I once wiped my cats paws w/alcohol after scratching me. I don't like that my own blood creeps me out. I sure hope I can slay this dragon.

sorry, I meant to say obviously that was in the first days of treatment, not surgery.

I had one episode where I cut myself in multiple areas in the hospital shaving my legs (obviously this was in the first days of surgery because God knows I didn't shave later) before I went in for a colonoscopy.  The room looked like a crime scene but they came to get me before I could get it cleaned up.  My son and grandmother came to see me after I'd been taken downstairs and there was blood everywhere.  My son cleaned it up while I was under sedation downstairs to no ill effect.

The chlorine in a pool would kill a virus I would think.  It's a valid and interesting question in some respects though because people do become infected during IV drug use when they share the same water with a dirty needle even though they aren't using each other's needles.  So water can apparently carry the virus in blood.  But someone else would have to be getting that bloody water into an exposed wound for it to happen in a pool, the amount of the water in the pool would dissipate the blood anyway, and then on top of that you have the chlorine.

Funny...it's my dog's name too.

Ya know, I just didn't have much creativity to come up with anything clever like say....heppygirl or havahepc....when I first joined this forum I was more like...........ARGG......HELP ME!  In retrospect, I think mremeet is a really funny name, but I probably would have gone with something like FLGirl or LiverGirl.  Simple and to the point!

I do love my Izzy-dog, tho!

The chlorine you use in a swimming pool is a much stronger/more concentrated version of Clorox bleach.

If a cut is not actively bleeding it is no danger to anyone.  So I think you can relax.
