I had two liver biopsy's, The first time the doctor just injected my rib cage with novacaine, tapped it with his hand, And inserted the needle and boom!, Felt light a light punch in the side (no pain), The second time, They used a sonagram to locate the liver, Injected novacaine right into the liver, (felt pressure on this), Then they inserted the needle, Took two seconds, The needle is spring activated, VERY FAST!, Really not a big deal, Sit around for a couple hours and go home, I went to work the same night!
I medicated myself with a Valium. Probably not necessary at all. It sounds much worse than it is. Really not that bad at all.
I don't what my biopsy was called but it didn't hurt a bit. BUT I was extremly nauseous for several hours due to the anesthesia.
Are you referring to a percutaneous needle biopsy? The term ‘core’ biopsy might mean a wedge biopsy too; can you be more specific?
Either way, you should be reasonably anaesthetized; and possibly sedated as well.
Good luck—

I took a biopsy and it was a breeze. I was nervous but it was nothing. The worst part for me was when they did the sonagram to mark the spot of entry. I thought the nurse was going to poke a hole through me with the marker.
I suggest taking a DS3 or a PSP or a good book to read, cause afterwards you'll have to lay around to make sure you are ok before they release you.
