Hep C treatment with new drug 2011

Well, I am 29 years old. I will be going on the tripple treatment for my hep C in July. I am so nervous. I will be on the Pegasys interferon, ribavirin, and the new drug. Has anyone began the treatment for all 3 drugs? I work full time, and I am also a student. I am about to start nursing school, but I feel it is important to complete the treatment before I dive into the RN program, and before I consider having children. What is the name of the new drug? I just need inspiration from people who can relate to me. Part of me wants to just go on with life, but I know I need the treatment. I have been infected with hepatitius for about 10 years. I have been sober from all drugs and alcohol since 2005. My life has changed tremendously. I can't afford to not work. Maybe I should get my shots on Friday before my time off on the weekend. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks so much.

hi. Are you on the treatment now? Maybe just wait until you know if you need it. As for me, I'm sober for 6 years off heroin, alcohol, meth, coke, all of the above. Mostly my drug was heroin, and I struggled to get off methadone, and avaoid all opiates like vicodin and codine at a young age. For me, I'm afrid it would be a trigger, like too much of a luxury, but if I end up needing something to get through it, that would be my last resort. That's just me though. I start treatment in about a month...

Hi everyone.  I spoke to the surgeon today and she told me I no longer need a liver biopsy.  Bless God!  Reason being -- since the new drugs are better at clearing the virus, they are just putting people on them and not running the risks of biopsies.  I'm sure this depends on viral loads too.  My labs have been stable throughout, so I will begin treatment in August.  That will give a bit more time for my doctor to determine how other patients are tolerating the new drugs.  Treatment is still 6 months to a year.  This thread of conversations has really helped quiet some of my fears, so I thank you and am wishing the best for all of us.

Hey I start treatment the end of July, geno 1a 13.9 million vl. I just wanted to say I think its great that you are going to be a nurse and would be even better to work with a GI as you would for sure know what the patients were going through..

Hi there.  Just curious.  What did you tell your boss and what was the outcome, if it's not too personal.

For me, I think some people will be fine, while others may back away as if Hep C were airborne.  As for the possibility of time off for "good" days and "bad" days, we have had several people in my office who had to go through chemo, so I told my boss I figured my schedule would be "in and out" like theirs.

Thank you for sharing your experience.  It helps!  My appointment with the surgeon to schedule the biopsy is tomorrow.  I am curious to see what anti-depressant/anxiety she will recommend.  I am currently on a low dose of Cymbalta and I don't know if that will change.  Of the side effects, I am noticeably sleepy (which surprises me since it is the lowest dose) and have dry mouth.

I agree with Cieritaqt, in that, there's some scarry stuff to be read out there.  I appreciate the supportiveness of this forum and will try to keep up with it.  It is on my "watch list" so I won't lose it.

Oh my gosh, thank you guys so much! How to I post to all of you without typing just one name? Like this?

Anyway, I am so glad we have each other to relate too. I'm going to be using this website often so we can support each other. i read some other posts on another forum because I searched "Long tem damage of interfuron"... BAD IDEA! I like the truth, but not hearing about things that make me wanna change my min about treatment. I am so glad that I am not the only one, and that we can all relate to each other. The new drug Teleprevir, seems like it won't be too bad. Maybe a rash and anemia. Overall, I am ready, but I still scarred. Thank you Jpritch2 for telling me your experience. I am going to stick it out, and not mention it to my boss, unless absolutely necessary when the time comes. Also Thank you Cindy, and Beblessed for sharing your experience. I hate the fact that I have beed exposed to TB. however, I am going into nursing school after I finish the TX treatment, so maybe I can work around people with TB, and not have to wory about getting exposed! HA! I am also considering being a nurse who works in gastroenterolgy, so I can help and guide people like us. But I know not to mix business with my personal experience, I guess that's what Alcoholics Anonymous is for. Anyway, I rambling. I'd love to hear any more of your thoughts.....

Thank you!

Some of my earlier posts (last year-march)asks the same questions you just posted.I too have tested positive for TB(latent). So we are in this boat together.I know of a few who also have latent tb and tx with no problems. But like you said if your immunity goes down you could take a chance of the tb becoming active.Double UGH !!!We just gotta stay positive that tx will work and not cause other problems-stay positive. cindy

I told my boss and wish I had not now.
I also set up my schedule where I was off every day after my shot... turns out I really could have handled it.  But it was nice for 12 weeks, and I am sure it helped my mental health.
sides were very minor... kind of like having a mild flu everyday..

Hey guys,

Thanks so much. It turns out i was confused on my genotype, it's actually 1. anyway, I will be starting the Teleprevir with interfuron and ribivivir in a month, now that is availible. i am nervous for many reasons, but also grateful and excited in a wierd way. I am a little concerned because I test positive for TB, I was "exposed" top Tuberculosis about 10 years ago. My doctor says that I cannot go on the INH (TB therapy) because it will be hard on my liver. Anyway, my TB is latent, not active, but it may become active if my immune system is suppressed in any way. I know the Hep C therapy might bring me down and cause the TB to become active. UGH! so frusterating, but trying to stay positive. Thank you cindy and Pedro, beeblessed and newday. I will come on here more often. any input? xo

Hi everyone.  I am new here and have never been in a forum before.  Wanted to say thank you to cieritaqt for posting the questions/concerns.  Wanted to also thank pedro007 for the answer, specifically -- what to tell my boss and co-workers.  I have Hep C, gen1, no symptoms whatsoever, not high risk, and will be going for the liver biopsy within the next month or two.  Totally anxious, nervous, but praying for the best.  I have told my boss that something is going on with my health and that I may be getting treatment similar to chemo, that will cause me to lose time from work.  I am preparing my department to run by itself, as much as possible, if I need to take time off.

As for the new drugs, the FDA approved Teleprevir and Boceprevir in May 2011.  Teleprevir will be marketed as Incivek, and Boceprevir as Victrelis.  I go see the surgeon next week and will discuss which one is recommended for me.  In combo therapy with the existing drugs, I understand these two have a significantly higher rate of clearing the Hep C virus, so that is something to be thankful for.

I am starting Cymbalta today, as the pre-surgery and pre-treatment is definitely getting to me, along with life in general.   Thank you for all of your input.  I need it!!  I have looked over a lot of posts and found the forum the more current and helpful.

Hi... Being clean and sober is the best thing you could have done for your liver. GOOD GOING !
Treatment hit me pretty hard so I couldn't work. Fortunately I had some $ saved to tie me over. I probably had the virus for 35 years, before the first symptom showed up. I'm 57 now. I went through triple therapy, a cocktail, in a clinical trial with a new drug called BMS790052. My virus is undetectable now ...und.
I am somewhat private so when I needed to explain to someone about my situation, I said  "I have a condition that can cause cancer. and I am going through a type of chemo therapy, to get rid of it".without having to say. HEPATITIS C. Everyone accepted that. Your boss should too, if you need to take some time off.

You may breeze right through it, with mild side affects ....sx., and be able to work. Don't try to do too much though and be somewhat prepared for being under the weather, at times. I was OK some days and really felt bad others. Being sick is never convenient.

Going through Tx is the only way to kill the virus. You definitely would not want to pass it on to your future child. Dealing with it, is a smart thing to do. Don't worry..We'll be here to help you along.  You can DO IT !

As you may know, there are some people on this site that have done a lot of research and know much more than the average family Dr. and will take the time to explain things to you. I can only tell you what it was like, what happened, and what's it like now.

What new drug are you going to take, other than RBV and INF... SOC ? There are many out there, some approved, most others in trials.

Hi. thank for your input, I have had a liver biobsy and I am genotype 2, and my viral load keeps increasing, but not by much. I want to get the treatment over with because the side effects are supposed to be less severe at a younger age, and I don't have kids yet, so I want to get it over with so I can be in remission. I am just nervous if I do the treatment and I end up getting physically sick at work that I need to have an excuse to be able to take some time off. Maybe I am over thinking it, it's probably best to take it one day at a time and worry about it once I start the treatment. Did you do the treatment?

Thank you so much, I love this website!

Be really careful who you tell.Is it really necessesary to tell your boss? You might glide through tx and be able to go on with normal everyday things. There is alot of negative stigma attatched to this disease  along with alot of uneducated people. It is really nobodys business that you have this hep C.Its easier not to tell anybody than it is to tell and not be able to take it back.
What genotype are you and have you had a liver biopsy? If you have only had this for 10 years and your liver is in good shape you may not need to treat right away.most people have had it for 20-30 years before symptoms develop
Congrats on the sobriety -But I really dont think I would discuss your personal health with your boss,Im sure there will be alot of folks that would agree with me  cindy

Hi! Thank you so much. When you worked, did you find the need to tell your boss about your treatment? I want to just continue on with my life while on treatment, ya know? Are you able to start the new treatment soon? It should be available to us in July!

I was on the treatment with Pegasys and ribavirin for 4 months.  I had alot of energy after my shot and felt bad a couple days before it was due again.  The treatment didnt work for me so I am waiting for the new treatment to become available. Some people work and do just fine on treatment or they are unable to continue with the things their used to during that time. Stay positive because you just never know how you will react. Congrats on your sobriety!!  Sounds like you have alot of really good things going on in your life!
