treatment,,,,and a new pupy

This is a little off the subject.....I lost my mini dachshund of 18 years in November.  Still reeling from it.   Now I discover I have Hep C.  My son is grown and out of the house.  I do have a boyfriend, although he loved my dog, he is really not a dog person.

I lay in bed, depressed, longing for my dog.  I am thinking seriously  about a new mini dachshund puppy.  I do work, although it is a struggle sometimes.  My treatments will start hopefully in the next month.  I think a new puppy will give me a purpose.  Make me get out of bed, keep me company, etc.  Could you folks that have been through the treatment give me a little insight?

As you can tell, I am depressed.  I think a new puppy might cheer me up, and I am a really good mommy to my dogs!!

my last dachshund I got as a puppy, and we REALLY bonded.  I feel like I can do the same with this one.  I know it will be work, but I am willing.

Thanks for your support.

hi, of course, then that makes a big difference...probably a moot point by now anyway, since it seems you've decided.....but I wouldn't get a puppy either at my age, treatment or no treatment, it's like dealing with an infant or a 2 year old, A LOT OF WORK!!! LOL...I just babysat a puppy not to long ago for a friend, WOW...I forgot how much work puppies are!!!! and there are many dogs a little older, who would be trained (the rescues see to that, and temprement tested, etc etc....) and personally, for me, I would get a rescued dog, then going to a breeder when there are so many dogs that need homes, and breeders only make more...and many people can get a breed specific rescue too, lots of people don't know that...there are beagle rescues, lab rescues, etc....just food for thought...but of course, whatever you decide to do I wish you the best of luck, with your dog and treatment...

I can appreciate your comments about the dog being left alone.  Fortunately, I have a job where I can take the dog with me during the day.

I put a deposit on my new little one today!   I'm very excited about it.

My boyfriend doesn't feel the same way.  He doesn't think he can deal with my treatment and a new puppy.  Oh well.  I'll be moving back into my house as soon as I can get my renters out it looks like.  Things all happen for a reason.

Now if I can just get the treatment started and over with!

Hi, nothing is better for my well being than my little pittie Petunia, she's all love and affection, plus she gets me out of the house with at least 3 walks and I exercise her at the park...

don't think you said you were starting treatment soon? I've always thought (and my nurse practitioner agreed) that dogs were good for this cause you HAVE TO GO OUT AND WALK them....good for the both of you...only thing is, if you're getting a NEW dog, you should be able to bond with them by staying with them a lot when you first get them, PARTICULARLY a puppy....they have to bond and acclimate to a new environment and owner....you say you work, do you have someone to come in and stay with them? or where the dog could stay? or maybe you work part time...I'm a real dog person, but I think we should also consider what's best for the pup as well...dogs can be unnecessarily traumatized by going into a new environment, and not be able to bond properly....which could lead to behavior problems....best to you and your new pup!..

Try to focus on the good times wirh your dachhund...and how blessed you were to have him for 18 years!
I know easier said than done. I have been gearing myself up for some time...about having  my 17 yo shih tzu put to ever lasting sleep...actualy three weeks ago, I made an appointment...and then he seemed to rally so I cancelled. He has been my best friend, more like my shadow all these years. I hope and pray he just goes into his bed and one night and doesn't wake up....

Everyone is different....I say I'm not getting a dog after...who knows, I can change my mind...
Susie has had experience w/ a pup during tx....and that worked out well...Sooo, I say  go for it!  The little doggies are easier to care for. I have been grateful I don't have to walk very far (at all) with my Bugsy. After this tx...I hope to travel and I plan on moving I don't know where, at this point...so I don't want my life revolving around animals for awhile...I've loved them and taken care of them all my life.

ooops....just read Proactive's humorous warning...better get outta here before Mike arrives...!

ps: I wst just thinking that it may be best to train the pup before treating.........

All the best Jean!

I was in your position a number of years ago. Only difference was mine was a mini schnauzer. I went ahead and took her. She brought me great joy and comfort throughout my trial with PegIntron and ribavirin. I will say it was difficult to walk her when the bad weather came. But you gotta do what ya gotta do for the little pups. I never regretted getting her at that time. And before I knew it was spring and the trial was over and I had one of the best companions ever. Good luck.

I wonder how Mike's cat is, but this is probably a topic for the Hepatitis Social forum. There is a link at the top of this page to the social forum.
