Hey Rob ~ great to see you post again and taking it one step at a time. Sorry your biopsy was so unpleasant. Both of mine were non-eventful. In fact my doctor used great meds and it was painless and fast. I guess we all respond differently to those kind of things; but hey, at least it is out of the way.

Please keep us informed. Remember you are not alone :)

I remember my biopsy, first time around (10 years ago) I was admitted to hospital and had overnight stay.  They sharpied up my side to give the dac a target and then a bee sting for numbing. That one was fine.  It was the one 2 months ago, outpatient with iv sedation laying on my back. different doc, bee sting and BAM felt like I got stabbed. My whole body clenched up and I said J C that hurt like sh!t.  They gave me some more sedative for the next stab saying it wasn't that bad but i disagreed.  They got second stab in, more clenching teeth and couldn't breath. There all done, not so bad eh.  I said NOT.  Doc said probably should have used a little more lidacaine.  Yes no kidding.  Really sucked.
end of story, it ***** sometimes and you just gotta tolerate it, i just wasn't expecting it to be 10 worse than 10 years ago.  A week later I got a card from the nurse, oh boy, nice touch.  I think my shot is starting to reveal my true self  so I will shut up now.  good night.

I will tell you that I have told my work and most of the people I work with, I am not in an a position that I would have to worry about bleeding on anyone, as my job is not physically demanding, but I will say I have received nothing but support from my peers at work and from the place I work, I just feel like I have to let them know because If I ever did get cut I would not wont them to be at risk....... but..... their were one or two that made an issue about it and it was embarrassing, I just dealt with it... I will say it's a hard call, I also have a best friend that works on the boats like you, he is a captain, and I know that boat hands can be a little brash, but I think as long as you have worked there you know the people, maybe they will accept this and support you, and chances are one day hep c will kick you in the but and you will have to tell them anyways....something to think about...... GOOD LUCK !!!

Sounds like you are moving right along what with getting your biopsy next month and all. Depending on the meds you take working outdoors on a tow boat may not be so bad. It really just depends so post when you have more info. Hope you are doing OK.

Well, good luck to you then. At least you know now, and you can find out the results of your biopsy.
Ya know, I do regret tellling some people, that I have Hep C, and I'm just talking about long time aquintances. I can never get over how ignorant many people are, concerning Hep C!  You cant get it from drinking from the same glass, but try explaining thatto some folks, they just dont get it, despite statistics, concerning house-hold transmisson rates which are extremely low!

no don't tell anyone, i got fired when they found out, i was on pegasys and i wasn't acting myself so had to tell them and they freaked. You don't need to tell anyone your not comfortable telling.  and the ppl that say they are laws well they didn't work for me, i did sue and won a small amount. but beware. DO NOT TELL ANYONE that your not comfortable with. Take care.

Just be aware that transmission of HCV is blood to blood.  IMHO, I don't think you have any obligation to tell anyone.  Even though there may be laws to protect, changes in attitude may make it unbearable to contine to work in this close environment.

Have you had a biopsy?  Do you plan to tx in the near future?  If so, do you plan to continue trying to work while on tx?

No they can not fire you because you have hep c.  There are laws to protect you.

It's a small world after all.
Hi Rob, my current husband is in the same profession as you. And he does have Hep C. You two may have worked together @ some point. But anyways.
One thing you may want to consider is how the tx, may  make you feel quite ill or weak. What are you going to do if your Hgb goes low? How will you get to a hospital or doctor for your labs or an emergency? What if they want you to ride over (over-time on the tow boat)
I just re-read what you wrote above and I see you said tug and not tow boat. So I am a bit confussed why you would stay out for a month on water on a tug boat. I am aware of the nature of business of tow boaters.
I am assuming if you are a deck-hand your job might be physically demanding, while on the other hand captains, co pilots and engineer's do not require as much hard physical labor w/ 12 hr work days 7 days a week.
Wow rob you have alot to think about!
You might just take a leave of absence , saying you need time off for medical leave or something. You may only mention your condition to higher  up's.  Maybe your company can offer you a land job, say driving the shuttle bus or loading and unloading on land.
I would not worry about your crew member's , as OH mentioned maybe they have it as well? But I also know about TB crew's ;-)
Good luck to you Rob and welcome to the forum

Hey, I had it for over 30 years and didn't tell anyone, because I didn't know!

Don't worry. Lots of people have it and don't know it. Maybe some of your crew members have it too.

I did not tell anyone - Good luck! I only told my Family such as Husband and children. No one else needs to know or, they might treat you different because they do not understand the virus. Good luck, Deb
