Inguinal Hernia - Strangulated?

Hi there
About three years ago I had an inguinal hernia repaired. Since then I have developed a direct inguinal hernia, which is reducible, and only fat protruding when strained.
I was ill a few weeks ago, coughing constantly for three to four weeks. Since then I have been feeling more pain than before. I am overseas at the moment, and seem to feel sharp pains in my groin, going down my left leg. I always seem to feel ill if I overeat also, with really bad stomach pains. The pain comes when I am walking, sitting, or hunched over, or bending over. It is better when lying down, and is intermittent.
I am still passing wind, and bowel movements are regular. I cannot feel anything as I am overweight, so I cannot see a bulge, or protrusion. When I do need to have a bowel movement, the groin does hurt, and quickly passes once I have been to the toilet.
I am fearful my hernia may now have bowel protruding through the canal, and want to know if I should seek medical attention now that I am overseas, or wait til I get home in a weeks time. I am fearful as I don't know the countries medical system too well (I am in Greece).
Thanks

Thank you for the info. To answer your questions, there is no discolouration of the skin. There is also no tenderness when you touch the area, as well as any swelling. And my bowel movements are still regular.

Thank you again, and I will get in touch with my local doctor once home.

Cheers

Hi, and understand your predicament. The pain could be due to prior surgery and fibrosis. Is there any discoloration on top of the skin? If there is a persisting defect, either fat or bowel can protrude through the defect. If a bowel loop is strangulated then there should be problems with bowel movements. If fat is strangulated then there should be tenderness to touch at that point, with swelling and discoloration. To clear doubts, it’s best you consult a local doctor. Take care.
