Risk of Laxative with a hernia

Can you take a laxative to relief constipation if you have a large abdominal hernia waiting for surgery?

I would say yes, it's better to take a laxative then to be constipated. Because constipation and hard stool causes you to bear down more and push on those muscles that push out a hernia. And of course not going at all can be dangerous. But if I were you when you do use a laxative when you go to the restroom I suggest you hold in your hernia, if it causes pain.
I have an abdominal hernia and my doctor prescribes Miralax and stool softener.
But that doesn't mean we have the same size or same cases. So it's best to consult your doctor just to make sure it's OK with them.  Good luck.

I have an abdominal hernia and my doctor prescribes Miralax for me.  Maybe this will help you also. You can always try stool softeners too.
But just because it was prescribed by my doctor my hernia might be smaller than yours, so you might want to talk to your doctor and get the OK.  Good luck.
