5 Yr old son has oral herpes...

Ok, so my family and I just took a trip from Augusta, Ga to Missouri to see my grandmother.... The last day we were there, ( the day we left) my 5 year old son started complaining that his teeth were hurting.... I called my mom who was a dental assistiant for 25 year's, and asked her what that was all about and she said that sometime's when your getting a sinus infection your teeth can hurt....But a few hours later, he started complaining that his lips were hurting.... I looked at his lips and they were white on the inside, and chapped on the outside... I figured it was because he was picking his lip which he does a lot.... As we continued our journey home, he wouldn't eat....I just thought that maybe he wasn't feeling good... So, eventually I looked in his mouth and he had this yellowish white coating on his tongue.. At first I thought this was Thrush but it wasn't completely coating his mouth.. It was just on his tongue.... And his breath was so foul..... Eventually, he wouldn't eat... Being 3 day's now not eating, when we finally got home I took him to the ER and they told me that he had oral herpes.... They gave me "magic mouthwash" for his mouth, so he could eat, antibiotics, and a pain medication..... He's doing a lot better now, but question is this.... Back in April of last year my 12 year old niece molested my son..... I was wanting to know if that could possibly be the cause ? Or if it's something he could have caught at Pre-K...... I know now that my son will have this horrible thing for the rest of his life... And it's so heart breaking...... Has anyone else had this happen ? I have heard that some dr's use Valtrex, but what it's not safe for him... Anything else?

Herpes lesions rarely become secondarily infected - especially inside the mouth.  That's why I said it was inappropriate.

They gave him the antibiotics because the blisters on his tongue were starting to pop open... He is finally eating again, and has been for a few day's, but thanks for the advice.. I am going to see what his ped says.

Unfortunately the blood tests are of little use in kids under the age of 14.

I'd follow up on this with his regular pediatrician.  It wasn't appropriate to give you an antibiotic so that his tongue wouldn't get infected. What would've been appropriate would've been to start oral acyclovir since he isn't eating or drinking due to pain.  It's too late for a lesion culture of his mouth area to get more definite answers. It's also too late to start acyclovir too from the sounds of things. That works best if started within 3 days of the start of symptoms.  I"m also very concerned by your report of his foul breath - that can be caused by not eating and drinking enough but it can also be caused by other things - typically not herpes.  So just give his doctor a call and ask for a follow up appointment this week to err on the side of caution.  Is he at least able to drink better now?

I know it's upsetting to think that your son might have hsv1 orally but actually 1/4 of all his friends have it too.  Also 2/3's of the adults he's around has it too even if they aren't aware of it/can recall obvious cold sores.  This could've come from any number of people in his life.  Picking at his lips all the time just makes him more vulnerable to boot.  It's an incredibly common virus that very few of us make it to the old age home without.

That makes sense. I think i would still seek confirmation thru a blood test though...

They gave him antibiotics so his blister's on his tongue wouldn't get infected.

i'm sorry to hear your son is going thru this... it sounds pretty horible.
I do not know enough about Herpes yet to tell you that is is or isn't herpes, but I know there could be several other reasons for similar outbreaks. How about hand/foot/mouth disease? I thinks its possible, however not that common, to get herpes inside the mouth and not on the lips.
I don't get why they would give him antibiotics if they thought that was just a herpes outbreak...
I would get him tested thru IgG blood test to make sure the diagnose was correct. The foul breath would lead me to think it was some sort of infection.
I ope he gets better soon and you figure it out.
