I am really confused about what kind of test to ask my doctor for to find out if I have either herpes simplex virus.  On this forum I read that the ELISA test is not accurate.  I have never shown and symptoms of either hsv1 or hsv2, but I am now dating someone who is hsv2 positive.  I want to get tested before we start a sexual relationship but my doctor told me that without symptoms that the test would not be accurate?  Is there a specific test brand I should be asking for?  I want to know if I have either hsv-1 or hsv-2 or both.  I had shingles about 8 years ago and I also am not sure how that would affect the test results.

no need to wait that long. 6 months at the very most.  We typically recommend just waiting 3 or 4 months.
