Acyclovir and liver enzyme tests. Neccesary or not?

I have been taking 200 mg of Acyclovir a day for almost 20 years to suppress the herpes virus. Occasionally I have to take more for outbreaks. I have been told that my dosage is unusually low and for the pharmacy my dosage reads 400 mg a day. Otherwise some of the supplemental insurance plans with the pharmacy will not pick it up. I do not have regular insurance.
My question is about the fact that my new doctor has told me I must take liver enzyme tests to continue the use of this prescription. I have never in 20 years been asked to take this test and question the reasons for it now. I have not had any symptoms that would call attention to this as an issue.
Is this a standard test? If not can you refer me to some links to professional literature so I can submit it to my new doctor. I am sick of switching clinics. It seems all the places dealing with the uninsured in this area are behind the research and I want to make sure I need this test.

thank you!

encourage your provider to read the prescribing info. it's very clear there that no routine testing is needed.

you also have every right to refuse testing.  just be clear that you don't want it done since you can't afford it and it's not necessary.

Thank you! It is genital. I have a high sensitivity to most all medications and almost always end up taking a lower dose than recommended. My partner of 8 years does not have it and as far as I know I never spread it to anyone before that time.

I am hoping to find some information to take into the Dr. stop her from insisting on an unnecessary test. Between the test and cost of the lab it will hurt our already low monthly income. If you have any resources for me I would really appreciate it!

Thank you !!

the prescribing info for acyclovir I believe states you don't need routine kidney or liver testing.  I haven't read it in awhile but you could check that out.  They stopped recommending routine blood testing while on suppressive therapy probably about 20 years ago.

200mg daily isn't an adequate dose at all. do you have hsv1 or hsv2? do you have it genitally or orally?   does your partner have herpes?
