Well that answer doesn't really give you an answer now does it? lol That's a cya answer if I ever saw one!
Go with the dose I recommended. It's easier to take and works the same way as a full 5-10 day course. I really do know what I"m talking about :) When it comes to herpes you want to hit it hard and fast - the number of days isn't the issue as much as the dose is.

Believe it or not, I actually got an answer on this from GlaxoSmithKline (makers of Zovirax).
Translated into english, their answer this:
"If the treatment is too short, the disease may reactivate since the symptoms can dissappear a few days before the infection is really gone. It is exactly as with antibiotics; the prescribed treatment must be completed even if you are feeling better after a few days, to make sure the infection does not come back"
The amount you were prescribed is for a first herpes ob ( the full 10 days ). It's not a recurrence dose.
The easiest way to use acyclovir for oral herpes is 800mg 3x/day for 2 days. It's not FDA approved as a dose but the literature backs it and it's become generally accepted as a dose ( acyclovir has been a generic for a long time so it's doubtful anyone is going to pay for the studies to go for fda approval of this dose ). I will gladly share the journal article citation for you if your provider wants it ( they can look for it themselves!!! ).
