Acycolvir

Hi. I've been taking Acyclovir for the past several months and it seems to be working great for my oral hsv 1 outbreaks. I was wondering though if anyone knows if viral shedding is also reduced when taking this med as daily suppressive? I'd sure like to be less contagious between obvious outbreaks!

Also, I've read that long term use may cause kidney damage and hair loss. Anyone experience any of these side effects?

Yeah, looking at it that way does help. And maybe with the Acyclovir it's even less. Let's hope!

No one is contagious 24/7/365.  You do however shed  both with obvious cold sores and without. I believe the handbook uses a shedding rate of 18% of days for hsv1 which would be 18 out of every 100 days or bout 2 months total out of the year.  That number includes both having obvious cold sores and shedding without obvious cold sores.  So you could be shedding say 3 days today, have an obvious cold sore next week and shed for 3 more days and maybe next month shed a day here and a day there and then maybe 2 days in a row over thanksgiving etc.  '

Even though 2 months out of the year sounds like a lot, it's still 10 months out of the year when you aren't contagious. Just gotta put it in perspective sometimes.

Hi Grace. Thanks. Good to know. I'm pretty cautious as to what I put in the body, so that does make feel a bit more at ease with taking the meds.

Also, on a side note, my GP said something interesting to me yesterday. He made a sweeping comment that people with hsv1  may be just as contagious without an active lesion as with. The info around here and in the Herpes Handbook doesn't really seem to support that, but he's got me a little paranoid. Surely he meant only during the shedding period and not 24/7/365?!

Jeez. I never used to be so freaked out about all this. I kinda wish I didn't know so much. LOL.

no risk of kidney damage or hair loss from long term use.

we know suppressive therapy can help reduce oral ob's but I can't recall off the top of my head if we have suppressive therapy and reduction in shedding orally with hsv1.
