Am I having a Herpes outbreak orally and genitally at the same time???

I am a 26 year old female that was diagnosed with HSV1 4 years ago; HSV2 test came back negative. I only decided to test for it because the person I was dating at the time told me they came back positive for both! He was the first person I had intercourse with. I was last tested October 2012 and still came back negative for HSV2.

About a month ago, I became extremely ill with the flu. I was out of work for about a week. Since then I've gotten better but about 5 days ago my lips started becoming sore at the corners. The following day I had bumps all over my lips and my lips were really swollen, red and chapped... No blisters, though. I immediately started taking garlic pills, bought Abreva, Carmex, and a Lysine ointment and have been using all these products at once.

The following day my lips were worse!! Extremely dry, bumpy, chapped, red, and swollen. I also noticed my inner vaginal lips were swollen. I had no bumps or discharge, simply blood spotting since I have been expecting my period. FYI, I have very irregular periods and the spotting is normal for my body several times of the year when I'm about to get my period.

My lips have gotten slightly better since, but have not fully recovered... I still look like a blowfish! They are super swollen, red, and bumpy! Ughh! Funny thing is I have no blisters or scabs. My mouth tingles every couples of minutes and my eyes hurt. My vagina has gotten worse with small bumps all over my vulva and inner lips. It itches, burns, and is very swollen!! Discharge is minimal. Are these symptoms normal??

I am sooo distressed and grossed out I just keep crying and crying. It feels like I'm have a double outbreak. I've been avoidinng my boyfriend of 3 years because I dont want him seeing me like this. Obviously I cant kiss or have sex with him. He does not know I hvae hsv1 since my doc always told me it was nothing serious and everyone has it, even babies. But now its different because I am actually having outbreaks IN BOTH PLACES at the same time, nontheless. I dont even know if they are both outbreaks, and if only one of them is. Not sure if my lips are experiencing an outbreak or if my vagina is! I just finished buying polysporin for my lips and monistat 7 for my vagina because I also fear it could possibly be a yeast infection. Ive had yeast infections before and were similar to what I have now, but now Im not sure if to use it since Im not sure what I have. I also started taking echinacea today as a natural anti-viral.

I honestly just want opinion as to what it seems to be going on with me and how I an possibly treat it. Im so confused because my boyfriend has never shown symptoms. i am also scared I may have hsv2 since hsv1 is not supposed to be so strong. I feel so down lately! Its already been 6 days and Im only getting worse. I dont know what to do. :-( sorry for the long depressing story.

Hi I've also had clusters of tiny white spots in the corners of my mouth and some towards the centre of my lips, my lips have been burning loads, but no blisters! I haven't been diagnosed with HSV (yet), still waiting on bloods for another couple of months. I showed my clinician and he thought it could be a fungal infection, angular chelitis, but I'm not 100% convinced. I'm sticking loads of anti fungal cream on anyway to see if it makes a difference. I'll let you know if it works

many viruses that cause mouth symptoms like you describe. pretty typical if you already have hsv1 orally for a cold sore to be triggered when you have something like that going on.    these viruses all run their course in a week or two and heal on their own. you have to give this all a little more time  yet.  really no reason to see any other medical provider at this point. too late to test to see if indeed you did have one of those viruses going on and nothing to treat them anyways - they go away on their own.

even your cold sore was halfway to healed without antivirals. it would've healed whether you took them or not.

I actually took Valtrex twice a day for 3 days and my lips did get better. However, I am concerned about my lips now since they still tingle and feel numb, even though they look ok. I even feel the numbness on my cheeks. I even think they are slightly discolored (there's like a whiteness to my bottom lip). Weird, huh? I am now waiting for some type of blister to re-appear.

My doc says she believes what I experienced was an outbreak, and that my weakened immune system triggered all of my symptoms and infections, due to the flu. Could be, but it's kind of strange because I never got the typical cold sore that begins like a blister, oozes, and crusts over. That never happened to me. Instead, the corners of my mouth cracked, then I got small bumps all over my lips which caused my lips to swell immensely and become very lumpy, red, and sore to the touch... and they were extremely chapped/cracked.

Now, it's funny you say you don't think my incident is herpes related. What do you think it could be? I understand you may not have an answer for me on this, but do you recommend I post about this on a skin forum? Should I see a dermatologist?

the cold sore dose of valtrex is 2gms twice a day for 1 day.  your provider prescribed the wrong dose for you.

zovirax cream isn't hardly effective at all for oral herpes and we no longer really recommend its use since it's insanely overpriced even after all these years.   actually no reason to even treat your cold sores this many days into things so your provider pretty much wasted your money all around :(     still think it was a non-herpes related issue that was going on that triggered a cold sore recurrence on top of all your other symptoms.

glad you got better answers about the vaginal symptoms at least!

So i went to the doctor Monday and she said it appeared to her I was experiencing a HSV1 episode on my lips, but the vaginal infection looked yeast related, not herpes (thank God). She tested me just in case, for HSV2 and prescribed medication for my yeast infection, Valtrex for three days on my lips, and Zovirax cream.

It is now Thursday and my yeast infection is practically gone and my lips "look" healed. I say the word look in quotations because they seem normal, but today I've begun feeling extreme tingling, burning, and numbness on my lips and surrounding skin! Ughh this never ends, does it? Is it normal to feel these sensations AFTER you finish medication for herpes?... Because most people say it happens before. Could it be that I going to have yet ANOTHER outbreak on my lips???? Could it be that my initial outbreak never really finished its course and now I am about to have huge blisters?? I am soooo over this! :-(

canker sores are completely different from oral herpes lesions.

One more thing! Are canker sores considered a form of HSV1?

since your partner is negative and so are you, not likely you really have hsv2.

more likely this is just vaginitis or even just irritation going on.

the actual numeric value of your hsv1 infection doesn't mean anything other than positive.  It's not a "worse" infection or anything and you can't tell how long you've been infected by the result either.

I also wanted to know if I can I possibly have Hsv2 if I tested for it 2 months ago and came back negative? My result was less than 0.1 and Ive only been with the same person. Also, what determines how high or how low your results are? My hsv1 result came back 23.1 and thats extremely high? Does the number get higher as the years go by and the higher it is, does it mean i will have more outbreaks?

Thanks for your response! I really appreciate you taking out the time for this.

My boyfriend hasnt been tested lately, but he has been tested in the past like 2 years ago and came back negative. I honestly don't believe he's been with anyone else, besides me sexually.

As for my symptoms, my lips are still red/sore and swollen, the bumps have diminished. My vaginal lips have small bumps still and very swollen. I will try to go see my doctor tomorrow so I can get meds for this. I'm praying they were not herpes outbreaks, and something else unrelated to stds.

THANKS!!!

abreva is over priced and barely got fda approval to say that it speeds healing of herpes lesions. It only healed them less than a day sooner than using a placebo and isn't worth the price for that teeny tube.  also garlic isn't effective for herpes and neither is echinachea.  though traditionally they both have antiviral properties, they don't speed healing of herpes lesions.

Is it likely that you had an oral herpes recurrence that was so extensive? No it is not. More likely whatever is going on isn't remotely related to herpes. Since it's 6 days into things, too late to get an accurate diagnosis for what is going on orally.

is it likely that you have a recurrence of hsv1 genitally currently? more likely something else going on. call monday and make an appointment to get properly tested for yeast and bacterial infections vaginally.

has your current partner been tested to know his status?
