How big is the chance of getting herpes when receiving oral sex?

Hey,

I received a blowjob from a girl.

She didn't have a cold sore and I don't know if she has herpes.

How big is the chance I get herpes this way?

It's possible, though we don't have studies to give you an exact number. Getting herpes from any kind of one-time encounter when someone has no sores isn't likely, though.

Do you know if you already have type 1? A large portion of the population has it and 90% will never get a cold sore, so it's possible you do and don't know it. Ask your doctor for a type specific IgG blood test to find out. If you already have it orally, you probably won't ever get it genitally, so long as you don't receive oral sex with someone with an outbreak.

Okay, thank you for the information. So, what are the consequences if I get it? What can happen with me? So actually, I can never receive oral sex without having the risk of getting an std?
If you get hsv1 on your genitals, you could get recurrent outbreaks. Most with ghsv1 have fewer outbreaks than those with ghsv2, and some only get one outbreak and never get another. Your experience would be unique, obviously, and there's no way to predict it.

Herpes is not nearly as awful as people generally think. The outbreaks, especially your primary one (where you are infected with either 1 or 2 without having the other type already) can be painful, but after that, it's really more of a nuisance.

And yes, you are at risk for an STD every time you give or receive oral sex. It's less risky than vaginal or anal sex, but there is still a risk.

It's nothing to overly worry about though. All hope is not lost for sex lol. You can use condoms for oral, which reduces your risk a lot, and they make flavored condoms, or just have sexual activity with people in committed, monogamous relationships after you test. Just keep in mind that there is no such thing as safe sex, just safer sex.
